Stripped Carb Bowl Screw- Question# 881
« on: September 15, 2016, 02:33:43 pm »
Okay all the screw thread for one of my carb bowls is stripped. This would be part of the body of the carb that is stripped and not the screw itself.  My question is do I try and tap it for the same size or go up one size?  Or should I do something else that you dont know until you ask? Thanks all for the help.

No sense pitching the bowl.  Try acorn nuts, and just get 4-5mm longer screws.
Tapping for next size up has been done.

You may be able to get by tapping up to the next size non metric screw bolt but just a guess without seeing it.

When this happened to mine I got away with slightly longer screws for a while, but in the end I simply installed helicoils and put the original screws back in - aside from a new carb body I think this is the best fix.

All,
I did the TAP and it worked great. Went to 8/32 and nice and tight.

Thanks all for the help.

Thank you.

Thought that might work, the other fixes are still in your back pocket up the road if need be.

I personally hate helicoils. So I understand why I haven't seen that posted. However working in aviation we use thread inserts. It's an entirely encapsulated thread that screws into the material and you either stake it or glue it in place. Rarely ever strip out.
