Topic: Hyper Link how to for this site?

 I don't really see a sub-forum for questions like this, so...

 I know how to do a hyper link but, for the life of me, I can't do one on this site.  How the heck do you hyper link on here?

I'm assuming you want an ICON on your desktop?  If so, (at least in Internet Explorer) you find the page you want to link, and right-click somewhere on that page that isn't a linked spot, and you get a dropdown where you can "create a shortcut" to that very page and place an ICON on your desktop.

 No, I want to be able to link to a website/URL and have the text that I write on here be the actual link. It's usually a different color (blue mostly) and when you click on the word(s) it's actually a link.

 Normally, I left click and highlight the word(s) I want to use, then click on the "insert hyperlink" button (on this site, it's a globe with a sheet of paper on it), right click/paste the link I want to use.

 But when I do that, it just posts the link and doesn't change the text to a link like madmtnmotors did.

It would be the coding for the "hyperlink" button. The actual code that I used to create the one above was from the post within the link I created:


[ url=link]Text[/url ]

I had to add a space after the first bracket "[" and a space before the last bracket "]" in order for the code to display here. The word "link" in the code above would be the actual url, such as:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=261188.0

And the word "Text" would be whatever text you wanted to use as the placeholder for the link. Now as far as automating the process that would give you a popup box for these two different fields is a little beyond my programming experience, I simply pasted the code into my response and filled in the fields manually. Post your results here if you do get it figured out though!

So my previous post looked like this:

You mean like [ url=http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=261188.0]this[/url ]?  (again, spaces were added in order to display the code)

and without the spaces, so the code will execute:

 Well, that worked! I wonder why the hypertext button on the forum doesn't work? Same reason the search doesn't work, I guess....

The "Insert Hyperlink" button is only coded as:

[ url][/url ]

Again, I had to add spaces to show the code.

So if you use the "Insert Hyperlink", then add "=http://www.yourlink" after the first "url" but before the second bracket, then add the "placeholder text" between the second and third brackets, so it looks something like:

[ url=http://www.yourlink]Placeholder Text[/url ] (again with spaces added to show code)

Looks like this with spaces removed:

Placeholder Text

It has to do with the code that is associated with the "Insert Hyperlink" button itself. The "Insert Hyperlink" button would have to generate the different code in order to work as demonstrated. The way it works now is no different than just posting a url into your reply.

You using Windows 10?! None/many of the above buttons seem to work with Win10. Not sure if it's Win10, SMF, or just SOHC4 that needs an upgrade/update.  I've gone back to Chrome just to make the smileys work again.
