I like the mufflers, but I would either wrap the pipes or paint them to match the cans

How about getting the mufflers PC'd bright silver w/ clear? they won't get near 400 degrees way back there.

I have plans.....the outer heat guard was rusty, so now it's semi gloss black. There'll be enough stuff to tie it all together when I'm done.

This might be anathema but...in the day (of the CL72/77) we used to weld on (and chrome) straight pipes to the curvy, sexy ones on these CL bikes, run them parallel to the back under a nice perfed or slotted heat shield, and then installed Snuff-R-Nots in the ends. The bikes loved it, and it really sounded sweet! Looked great, too!

 Yes, I'm told total length has a LOT to do with getting the optimum performance, be it with pods or not. When talking with PJ about the pods mod, I gave him total overall length with the mufflers I have and it was good. The fact that they're baffled helps, too.
 Might not be quite as good as Soichiro intended, but look what I was starting with!!

 Got the exhaust/muffler mounting worked out today. We made a heavy duty bracket for the rear hanger. Everything seems very sold and the mufflers clear the shock.
 The bottom/LH side muffler appears to be sticking way further back than it really is; in actuality, it's only sticking back about 3.25 inches. Plus, when you take into account the length of the top/RH exhaust, it's still about 5-6 inches longer overall.
 One reason we had to do it this way was to get the "fat" part of each muffler to not be on top of each other. Otherwise, it would have spread them apart too much to get the pipes to line up.
 I'm happy with it. It looks great in person (IMHO), has baffling, some length for better tuning and it kinda reminds me of the H/D XR750 style exhaust.

 Got the fender back from the powder coater today and installed the tail light.





 And as I was uploading those pics to the computer the mail lady arrived with my new seat from Viet Nam.

 Not a whole lot to report.... I installed the turn signals (wow....the flash makes that chrome look bad, but it isn't). Waiting for some points and condensers to show up for a little preventative maintenance. Just got word that my carbs are done (pods mod by CrazyPJ).
 Guess it's time to pick a color and start on some bodywork.

 If there wasn't a shallow, palm sized dent in the side of the otherwise spotless tank....
 That and the fact that the headlight and side covers are all different colors.

 Slow going on this one lately. Got hit with a massive block of overtime at work, waiting on parts, etc. I got the carbs back from PJ and I oiled up the filters and got them installed.




 One of my coils tests dead. I have a line on some parts locally and just can't line up schedules with the guy to pick them up. I also have new points and condensers to install. I plan on dropping off the bodywork today. Still haven't decided on a color 100%, but wanted to get the tank and stuff over so they can start on it and have it available, since I seem to work a ton of OT around the holidays.

 Got the bodywork back the other day. It's as close as I could get to an old VW color; Anthracite gray. Sort of a putty color.




 I also got the exhaust installed for good. Here, you can see the satin or semi-gloss black on the engine, fenders, heat shield, etc., and how it'll look with the grey and black and just a touch of chrome. I may add some thin line stripes to the tank later.

The 450  bikes that Team Hanson won Daytona with was set up like that. Pretty scrambler-ish except the cans.

I saw several of the pipes that merge at the tips at barber, am I mistaken as to what that was?

 I think the early bikes merged into a single canister/muffler. As did some smaller cc bikes, like the 175.

 Yep, was just talking about that yesterday. Maybe a thin Super Sport style stripe with a ~1/4 black stripe and then either a thinner black stripe beneath or a thin orange to match the jewel. Just enough color to tie it all together.

Orange flanked by white. Isolates the orange at distance. Up close, the white becomes "creamy" and a very nice offset to the grey. Just use the proper color value of white.  ;)

 Started connecting the wiring in the headlight bucket and ran across a few little snags.

 White wire This comes from the RH control and goes to the headlight. I had these wires repaired (poorly extended for a chopper job, I guess) and this should be a male. I have female here and female at the headlight. Guess I can make a jumper.



 Black wire This is hot and should have a plastic sheathing, no? Guess I can just wrap it up with electrical tape.



 Green wire This is the one I really wish I had seen when the wiring harness was loose and outside the bucket. I don't have enough ground connections because this has been cut. I'm debating whether to try to solder on a connection in that tight space (I have a spare harness with the parts I need) or maybe make some other type of ground connection. Maybe just extend the connector from the donor harness and run it down the back bone of the frame to a good ground?
