Soft saddlebags
« on: September 28, 2016, 05:19:14 PM »
Since the topic of a backpack came up, rather than highjack that thread I thought I'd start a new one.

Looking for a set of saddlebags that will fit either my CB750 Limited or my CB550K.

My first inclination would be to go with the Nelson-Rigg's that are offered
https://www.nelsonrigg.com/luggage/saddlebags/adventure-dry-saddlebags-detail.html

But it seems like they're tailored for dual sport bikes.  A CB550 is not a dual sport and I'd be concerned about the bag melting on the muffler.

Any experience in this area?  I have a tail pack on my CB750 Limited but I find that it just doesn't sit solidly enough and I have a tendency to kick it over when I dismount.

I bought a couple of these a long time ago when Tractor Supply had them and back then they were around $18.00. Slip under the seat and they have some rings for a zip tie. Can be made to mount higher by folding/securing the middle strap if needed. Option for those wanting to go on the cheap.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Weaver-NYLON-BLACK-HEAVY-DUTY-SADDLE-BAG-/322243695842?hash=item4b073894e2:g:zaIAAOSwgmJXw0fx

I have these, they fit on all my vintage bikes. They are kind of small, OK for a single rider.

I also have another set that is more of a square design that the wife and I can fill for a weekend trip. I can't find any pics, but I have seen them on all the accessories web sites. Both sets are "throw-over" and can be carried like luggage when off the bike.

I have these that I bought years ago when I had my FJ1200, but they work just fine on my 550's as well.

The only downside is that the rain covers are poorly designed and functionally useless. When i take trips I put all my clothes in large ziplock bags.

That would be $425 for 1 bag.  Just one.  You don't even get the pair of bags for that.
It looks nice and all, but DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN

I have a pair of the field sheer bags that I picked up at a garage sale for $15.  I'm cheap.

I picked a pair of soft saddle bags from craigslist for $50 before my trip to Barber, they worked well enough, but as Danny says, not totally waterproof.

In my experience only hard cases are watertight.

I have a pair of those too. Pretty nice quality and yes a bit small but they have to fit above the exhaust. I have a bit of a burn mark from them sitting on the exhaust for a bit. After some adjustment they clear the pipe now.

Alright that works then.

I don't need a pair of suitcases strapped to the bike, just something large enough to hold a couple of items from the grocery store or something like that.
