Paint.Bondo.No Paint?...No Bondo?
« on: September 21, 2016, 09:11:41 PM »
Hi Everybody,
I picked up this 1978 750 a couple months ago.  It was pretty rad the way it came.  The only things I'm planning to do with it is change the paint..throw gators on there...maybe pipe wraps...and maybe lose the front fender.  I started removing the paint a couple of days ago with paint stripper.  I was going to do the bare metal look.  I have the paint mostly removed and have come upon a little bondo which might wreck my plan.  What would you all do?  Is there any chance the bondo is being used to patch a hole...or maybe it's not bondo?  Should I just pull it out and let it have a dent for character?(I kind of like bikes a little ratty.)  Maybe throw a decal over it?  Redo the bondo and then paint the hole thing black (plan B).  Anyway, just spit balling here, hoping to get input from some other enthusiasts.  Thanks in advance.

I agree that the PO's paint was not a masterpiece.  I like the bare metal look sealed with a clear coat.  I would pull the dents as much as possible.

Body filler is legit, but there are better ones than Bondo out there.  Check stores for body shops in your area.

On Red I wanted to fill emblem mounts on the tank, I used metal bonding epoxy, many layers, lots of spraying and sanding and you cant tell now.

No body filler will stop a leak. Epoxy might, but that appears to be a filler, and is likely due to a dent or imperfection.

I missed the hole :)

Holes in tank can be soldered, Red tank had about three pinholes and i fixed all of them with soft solder.

Thanks, it's not for sure there is a hole in there yet.  I'm probably going to pull this filler out tonight and see exactly what I'm dealing with.

Doing the bondo removal using chemicals won't sand away or grind away metal which will weaken any thin areas that might be there.  Sanding where you think there is a hole might just grow that hole larger. If the hole is from an accent or drop it is one thing, but if it is due to a rust out from the inside you would be better  off ponying up for a good tank. They aren't easy to find on ebay as those which are go for good money...so, rather than spending and being disappointed by what the seller may or may not have known, you may wish to educate yourself on what to and not to look for...

Thanks David turns out it's not a hole.  I sanded carefully and found it only to be a small dent.  The dent is staying on it works for the look I'm going for.   :D
