Engine Dismantle

Hi,

I'm taking apart my 1977 CB400F (UK) engine ready for painting, are there any specific tools i'll need to do this? Also, are there any really useful websites that can help me when i come to putting it all back together?

You'll definitely want a set of JIS screw drivers to undo all the slotted screws. They're not Phillips heads, and use of a standard screw driver will result in stripped slots. A hammer drivers impact wrench is also quite useful for unsticking stubborns screws.

Yes. Definitely.  All three sizes of Japanese Industrial Standard screwdrivers will help.

A Hammer, a big farkin Hammer. One that you need Ape Arms to swing. Personally, I recommend a 3Lb Sledge, though others will tell you a Dead Blow is the way to go. Either way this tool will unquestionably help in speeding you through disassembly of the 400 motor. Got to a point where a bolt or screw is stuck? Bring out the Hammer. Thingamabob won't come apart? Bring out the Hammer. Don't quite understand the shop manual? Bring out the Hammer. Smack your thumb squarely with the Hammer? Throw it at the wall, it's quite the versatile tool.

Get the Honda shop manual and a Haynes or Chiltons - they have better/different pictures but the Honda one has some important procedures.
Honda's manual is for real mechanics and assumes you have the proper tools, a lot of stuff a mechanic should know is not explained. The others are more for backyard novices and will help if you are one.
Take pics as you take it apart, especially the shifting mechanism and transmission (don't disassemble the gearshafts without a good reason).
Keep the main bearing shells in order - put them back where they came from.
