My new hobby: CB 750 Restorations
« on: September 13, 2016, 08:49:48 PM »
Howdy fellas.  I have decided to spend the rest of my life learning how to restore CB 750's.  Have bought some books (shop manual, Beginner's Guide to Restoration), getting the workshop together.  Where can I find step by step instructions on initial disassembly?

But Mark Paris' book, "My CB750". He's a member here and goes by Hondaman

Welcome. +1 Hondamans book.   Disassembly is easy and fast - take a lot of pictures to review upon reassembly.

Did you buy the bike yet?

Good luck!

I retired a couple of years ago and took on restoring a '74 CB750.  Along the way I met a lot of people who gave me some help and on a couple of engine things I took it to a shop.  I really enjoyed doing research and learning how these bikes work.  I would strongly recommend getting Hondaman's book; Mark Paris has put together a great resource.  Also the Hack-a-Week videos are great.  Make sure you take lots of pictures as you take things apart, I took some and wish I had taken more.  After 3 years, I now have a really nice vintage bike that gets a lot of looks and is fun to ride.

Well the truth is only one is mine Johnie. The 71 CB500  bike is mine. Paid $50 for it and will be the next one I tackle, but not sure when that will be. Got to do some maintenance and fix a few issues on other bikes first. The 74 CB750 and the 73 CB350G are my son's bikes that Im keeping in my storage building until their ready to do something with.

Welcome and enjoy! I like to re-assemble small parts after they are removed, freezer bags for nuts and bolts marked with a sharpie and lots of pictures. old oil bottles with the tops cut off stacked in a shoe box are good dividers for hardware.
And X2 on Marks book. I've been working on these things for years and use the book a lot.

Welcome Doc,
Hobby motorcycling involves wax, polish, and the occasional beer run for nonprofits.
Restorations and rebuilds can be a life changing event , when you finish one ,you 'll want to out-do your last project, make improvements in technique, maybe cross the factory standard alittle and try something a little custom...buy the 4th project you got it down like a production line and restomods give you the freedom to do something different than the first 2 and a bit more than the third. You realize that so many things that aren't stock can be fun to do, different variations of the same  theme . Allot can be done to change each machine from the next and as long as the frame isn't cut  you can always bring it back to factory, if you wanted to.
Who knows, by 10 or 12 you may want to try a cafe and cut a frame or 2. Whatever you decide to do , how many you decide to do is all up to you but , no matter what ,  you must have fun doing it, you must  love walking into your shop every time you walk through the door....even on the hardest day, when you ask yourself " why i got into this in the first place", and then you find a grin coming on, and it just isn't that bad anymore.... that's when you know why. Enjoy the work, love each project, and most of all, have fun.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
