Footpeg restoration
« on: October 09, 2016, 05:41:33 AM »
What is the correct distance from the foot rest to the brake pedal? I'm working on a broken footpeg at the moment.

Here's a question hardly ever asked on this forum, what bike?

Mine is Honda CB 500 Four-K 1978. I think the distance has to be more or less the same on all the CB bikes. I just want to weld it together to look like it's an original piece.

The footpeg is forged, I would look for new one before welding a broken one.

My $0.02 only, of course.

Even better question -- has anyone figured out how to improve the utterly terrible passenger peg and mount system?

I can think of any number of bikes that have similar or worse mounting systems.

I don't see a problem with welding one up if you're a competent welder.  That said, losing a footpeg while in motion would be a real danger - especially since the passenger would likely try to either get a perch on the exhaust, the chain, or the wheel.

There have to be hundreds of them available online - I know Bent Bike (the local wrecking yard) has probably close to 200 sitting in a pile up on a shelf.

On Red, i used front pegs from 750 SS for the passenger. Easy to adapt, works well.

Thanks for everyone! Replacing the whole thing has been the priority but it's been difficult to find the right one with a reasonable price.

For some reason the previous owner has lengthen the footpeg by welding so that't the reason I don't see welding as a problem. I'm trying to shorten it to it's original length and I can see the original seam but I wanted to be sure about the length.

You mean he lengthened the end that bolts to the bike making the brake pedal closer? - maybe the PO had very small feet? Mine are all about 4 inches or 10cm between the edge of the footpeg and the edge of the brake pedal.
I see no problem with welding it as that is how they are made in the factory!

Yes exactly. But not only he lengthened the mounting of the footrest, he had also lengthened the break pedal so basically the distance was kept the same but the brake pedal and footpeg is closer to the front wheel. Still, the left side of the bike is original that makes the riding position pretty funny.

I have no idea why somebody would do this but probably he had some difficulties holding his right foot in the original position.

Anyway, I started to modify the piece yesterday and it's looking pretty good. I have managed to get the original break pedal and will try to weld the footpeg back together. If it's not gonna work I'm gonna find an original part.

Pictures?

Sure I have pictures! Now I even have before and after pics 'cause I got the work done with a help from competent welder.

In the first pic you can see how far front the peg and break pedal used to be. I took the second pic today after the job. There you can also see the new brake pedal which I think is from K2.

The last two pics are before/after of the footpeg.
