Frozen lock nut/adjuster on clutch lifter
« on: October 11, 2016, 04:56:16 AM »
 1973 CL350

First, I ordered the wrong cable by mistake. Got the new one in and went to make the static clutch cable adjustment only to find the lock nut hopelessly frozen on the stud.
I've tried penetrating oil, heat, tapping it with a hammer....even using Vice Grips on the screwdriver handle. I disassembled it as much as I could from the inside of the cover but couldn't back it out.

Before I order a whole new sprocket cover, any tricks to separate the death grip?
The bad thing is, I was just at Barber and could have filled up a box with sprocket covers for $5 each!! Doh!

As you can see, the slot is already starting to get boogered up. I can't get the threaded portion and the lock nut to separate. I removed the piece from the inside, but it still just spins as one unit. I'm not sure how to remove it from the cover without getting the  lock nut off.

I believe it's hopelessly stuck. Tried more PB Blaster, heat with a propane torch, double nutting it from the inside, a big punch, etc. It just spins in the sprocket cover and the nut and stud are one.  :(
Guess I'll start the search for a replacement cover.

I used a cut off wheel on the nut/stud but removed a bit of the "perch" on the side cover when doing so. I think my best bet is to just replace it all.

Will drilling into the stud help ? Progressively bigger bit sizes till theres no more material within the nut ?

Is there anything special about that nut? Seems to me the easiest answer would be to sacrifice it - use a nut splitter (probably too small) or grind with a Drexel until you can pry it clear of the threads.

The reason i asked to see the bottom , to see if you could hold it a force nut loose.
Keep the cover to make a nice cut down one..

I removed what Honda calls the "cam" from the inside and threaded on a nut so I could use ratchets on both sides..... wouldn't budge.

I can get a replacement stud and nut, but the cut off wheel buzzed down the little "perch" on the outside of the cover and now the locknut won't sit flush. I might be able to grind it down flat and use an extra washer and save it, though.
