Love the look....  Yes, clearance is an issue, but all of those Harley bagger guys scrape the ground.... why can't you??!!

Lol. I'm going to rock the hardest suspension you've ever seen. I actually have a solution, it's just a lot of time and money. If I make a new header that's half the puzzle, and the 2nd part is a custom oil pan. I can easily pick up an additional 2 inches of ground clearance.

I hope you are young and not real tall because those rearsets are going to fold you up pretty good.  I prefer my pegs closer to the swingarm pivot...

But, I have neck and low back issues and cannot ride in a sportbike position.

Hey I'll have you know I'm every inch of 5' 6" lol. AND my legs are short for someone of my height. Back like that it opens up my hips nice and it's just really comfortable. Being 31 helps too!  ;D

The radiator and brake rearset will have their issues to face.  But you will have a unique bike that should be lots of fun.  The drums can be arced and relined with better friction material if you need better stopping power. Vintage Brake is great for that.

Just install a spark plate and it'll be good.  I'm sure you will sort out the clearance issue.  The bike is unique and looking good.

Jag,

I may have missed this but are you going to use the "stock" EFI and modify the tank to accept a fuel pump or are you going to retrofit carburetors?

Makes sense. That's a little bit of tank surgery but nothing too nuts.

The plan is to drop the exhaust and pan today. My buddy is gonna take it to work to scan, and he is gonna cnc a new flange to build a pan onto. Im also going to have him do a flange for the throttle bodies to build the intake off of. I also ordered a 7mm offset 520 sprocket to finish up the powertrain.

As far as exhaust, i want to do something different, might try to keep that metal shield and have the exhaust exit through it somehow. The cat is going buh bye,  maybe just a small can behind the shield then tubing from the back of it to exit the shield. Just thinking out loud.

Long story short, a friend is making me a billet aluminum oil pan 2 inches deep, so I will have 4.5 inches ground clearance. Here it is with the oil pan and exhaust off.

jag,

I noticed from the first post that you were hoping to get 60 hp out of the CBR500 engine.  That motor in stock form makes about 47 hp and 32 ft lbs of torque.  Are you doing some tuning work to the engine to extract the additional 13 hp?

I remember hearing that the CB500F/CB500X/CBR500R motors are all limited to 47 hp to qualify for riders with stepped licensing in Europe and Asia.  Supposedly, you can use a Power Commander to unlock 53 hp but this will void your warranty (not that you appear to have one). You can extract another .6-1 hp with exhaust.  I don't know how much more you can get.  There is no known big bore kit that will not cause the ECU to go catty wampus.

My buddy got approx. 67-68 horsepower at the rear wheel from a 1990 Kawasaki EX500, Bored to 600cc with Engine Dynamics kit, Webcam 245 cams, Barnett clutch, heavyweight springs - mated to a CB550 frame.

The Honda should probably make more power if it was not specifically designed not to make over 47 hp.

In retrospect, he probably could have used a Ninja 650 twin with 71 hp/47 ft lbs stock, but I'm not sure how easily it would slot in. The EX500 motor fit easily.

The 650 motors are cheap and go for about $700.

I figure exhaust with no cat, better intake, ported, cam and tune, 60 shouldnt be difficult. If i want to make sure to get there ill mill the the head to raise compression and adjust the pistons if necessary. I think thats more than enough to get over that number though. Theres one guy with something like 57 to the wheel with less that that.

Sounds like a little bit of money and someone who knows how to tune a Power Commander.  I'm interested to see what you get out of it.

The license classes in Europe and many other countries is based upon kw and hp, the A2 license is limited to 46 hp and thus the limitations on the motor...
Many today do it with electronics.  Most do not go by the hp numbers these days in Europe...

If someone were to go hog wild with this motor, I'd wager it could get to 70-75 crank hp before reliability goes out the window. I don't plan on pushing the envelope too far, since this motor in stock form is made to last, and I want to keep that. Just a little coaxing is all I'm looking for. That combined with how little it weighs..... well it'll do what I want it to  ;D. I keep saying I'm building this to show more than ride, but if it rides as good as I'm hoping I may have to build one to ride and a 2nd to show lol.
