1980 CB650Z help with stiff throttle and wheelie tips?
« on: October 18, 2016, 02:57:50 PM »
Hey,

first I was wondering if anyone had some tips on getting my front wheel off the ground. Had a 79 kawasaki z400 before that I could get up in first gear dropping the clutch from about 6.000 and higher. Im still learning how to bounce a bike up so some were better than others. After getting swapping for my CB650 Ive tried a few times on but it feels a long way from coming up.

Any tips and tricks? Previous know how re. RPMs etc.?

Also, does anyone have a source for buying a lighter spring for my pull throttle cable return?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel :)

Daniel,

With all due respect, this is not www.dankwheeliesbro.net  ;)

You can probably find a few tips by searching youtube.com with "how to wheeile"

Ok so a bit of a mixed bag in the response column so far, I will say that I do take it easy and cruise around 99% of the time, but that said I think it's good to know what your bike does when pushed a bit.

New cables already ordered, after reading a bit I'd just seen that some people had actually swapped out the spring so was wondering where to get one?

Your local ace hardware has a spring that could be modified to work.  Downside is you have to go and dig for it.

Daniel,

Try not to make the next compilation video because, "Stupid hurts!"

Motorcycles really perform their best when both tires are in contact with the pavement.
The folks that wanna ride wheelies in traffic are the ones that find themselves in a world of hurt.  Its unfortunate that they can take other riders down with them in those group rides.
Can I point out that the stunt show bikes are modified for the trick?  If thats something OP wants to do, a vintage cb is a poor candidate for the gig.  The motors aren't well protected.  Drop a cb on its side and you're gonna mash up alternator and ignition covers, break fins, and that's if you're lucky.  Drop the bike with some speed, and say good bye to your machine.
Most of the member bikes here are 40 years old.  I've set a goal to keep mine in one piece for another 40.

Thanks Bomberman :) will check out the hardware store when the time comes but the selection here's in Norway is atrocious compared to what you can find in the states so was hoping someone knew of one in particular...

I do actually agree and am not looking to split lanes on my back wheel, otherwise I would just buy a dirt bike :) what surprised me was the difference between the z400 and CB. I assume it's something to do with weight and where the torque peaks?

Attached a pic of my bike by the way! Also looking to keep it in the same condition/better for the next 40 years

I neglected to note you were a Norwegian!  Hopefully your local hardware store has something that can be made to work.

That's a nice cb you have there.  Keep it that way :)

These bikes were not wheelie kings. For wheelies you want a modern sport bike, the R1 is "pretty good" at wheelies (pretty hard to keep the front wheel down, actually)... if you want vintage look for an RD400 - or, if you're a bit suicidal, a Mach III.
You may be able to get the wheel up by shifting your weight back as far as you can, and jerking back on the bars under full throttle in first. It's very hard on the chain and clutch to rev and dump, better to be going 10mph or so when you try that as this will give you less chance of the bike falling over.
It is your bike, if you want to break it I can't stop you.

my 650 skips the front wheel under hard acceleration in first and second. to do a wheelie you have to dump the last bit of clutch when taking off. I'm 57 and the bikes 37 years old so we both prefer full rubber contact.

Buy a different motorcycle if you want to learn how to wheelie. My 91' CB750 came up only a couple times and that's launching it from a stop on the limiter, but even then, not enough power to carry it out.
