Loose shift drum pawl retainer plate
« on: October 20, 2016, 03:40:02 AM »
From HM posts:
“I am seeing engines coming in now with the shifter drum pin-retainer discs loose, which is causing incomplete and mis-synched shifting. This looseness is coming from the high drag during the shift, makes the rider pull-push the shifter harder, which loosens the screw on the disc;

Loosened shift drum pawl retainer plate. This is a wordy description of the screw and retainer plate that holds the pins on the shifter drum: if abused, this screw can work loose, letting the pins fall out of alignment …. It was dimpled in the locked-down spot when built, so if it's not tight, it will be obvious.”

I have my cases apart for rebuild and the shift drum screw is indeed loose as described - what’s the correct way to remove/re-tighten the screw (it has the normal two ‘dimples’)?  I’m concerned that if I use force, either the screw head will chew up or I’ll damage the plate/pins etc.

Thanks.

Appreciate the quick response; took a couple of firm blows to shift it but now tightly back in place with Loctite and fresh dimples.
