harley v rod beat by 20 yr old bike
« on: November 29, 2006, 03:16:13 PM »
watching pinks on the speed channel yesterday and they had a race between a 1983 yamaha 1100 and a harley v rod
the yamaha was stock and the harley had flashed his computer to up his rev limiter
harley lost in three with the last race the yamaha gave the harley one length
i test drove a v rod a while ago and i was not impressed execpt it had a lot of low end torque
not enough to beat that old yamaha

yep, it was nice to finally see this episode... there was a thread about a year ago with this same subject... i've been waiting since then!  you can tell it was from back in the day when pinks had no audience  :D

i've been trying to convince my gf to let me race her viffer.   8)  so far, no success.

Personally, I'd take the XS1100 for a lot less money and get a better ride. Plus, if you had some money, you could do quite a bit and still be a lot less spent than buying the V-Rod. My 2-cents, plus I threw in an extra 2-cents for good measure.  ;D ;D

Hey hef,  Was it a Suzuki, tramp said it was a Yamaha. I didn't see it so I didn't know. At any rate, a GS1100 ain't no slouch either. I've never ridden one but, have heard nothing but good about them. No matter, I wouldn't have a VRod anyway. I'm just not a H-D person and mean no disrespect to those who do like them. Take care and keep up the good work.

Unless they did another Vrod vs. Jap bike race......I think it was a rerun. The bike was a red Suzuki GS1100E.....right??

I saw it about a year ago....the Suzuki smoked the Vrod. Vrod guy keep saying his clutch was overheating.....BLAH BLAH BLAH!! ;D
I'm not a big drag racing guy.....but correct me if i'm wrong...its not like road racing where you use the clutch every 5 secs slipping it.....drag racing you dump and go.....then speed shift.....righ????

GS1100 was a GSX1100 in Britain.
It has 4valves /cyl and is still a pretty awesome motor. (pre GSX-R SACS engine)
Doesn't take much to get  a lot more power out of it, 150~ 180bhp is relatively common with a 1428kit
Best one I've seen has 318bhp without turbo or nitrous (but it is a 1550 now, and revs rather high ::))

I seem to remember a well publicized Drag Race between a Sportster and a Kawasaki 500cc Mach III back, when the Mach III was introduced. The Sportster never stood a chance. The Mach III turned 12.7sec right out of the crate. They just uncrated it (at Lion's Drag Strip, CA), serviced it, made a few runs, did some adjustments and Lined Them Up. I wonder if it was just the rider? ??? The newer 600cc Sport Bikes will beat a lot of bikes but we're not talking about the Sport Bikes though.

PJ, Sounds like the Suz 1100s are really being worked over. It seemed like the 1100 was a pretty good runner, as is. Oh well, Later on,    Bill :) ;)

the thing to me is that they say porshe designed that motor and a 20 yr old bike blew his doors off and the v rod modified his cutoff on his ignition for higher revs
it might have been a suzuki
either way that harley sucked

All about the rider...

Hate to tell you this gents....

Drag racing slips calls for slipping the clutch like you own barnett and have not a care in the world what plates cost.

Heres what ya do ....Rev the bike to about 7000 rpm. Or somewhere slightly below peak torque RPM.(whatever it is for your bike)

When the tree hits your spot... Start feeding it clutch. If it lifts the tire or starts to spin....slip it a tad.

If it hooks up and launches feed it cluch til its fully engaged.

When you hit your rpm ....shift

and repeat as ness. to keep the wheel on or close to the ground and the back tire from spinning.

Trick is to keep it in the RPM range which will deliver the most power.

Launching off the line at 1200 RPM is kinda pointless. Were I drag racing my 72 K I'd launch at about 6000 rpm (which would wheelie me off the back if I did not limit the effects of dumping the clutch...slipping it instead)

Between the two I'd take the GS in a second, no matter what. And if I had to take a Harley a '47 knucklehead would be girst choice and next a late '50s panhead. A distant third would be a '68 Sportster. A V Rod and a Yugo have the same appeal to me.

i was going to rag on you and say that you didn't know how to ride your bike if you thought a gs1100e couldn't drag worth crap... then i realized you were talking about the 2 riders on pinks 8)
the first guy that i met while i was at MMI owned a gs1100e... FAST

I didnt see the show but a V-rod should have out dragged a stock GS1000, even an S
The thou needs a bit of work to get over 100bhp and has higher CoG (not sure if its heavier?)
The forward controls on a v-rod will make gear change a lot more difficult for drag racing so the rider would really have to know what he's doing
Its doubtful if there are many 'standard' GS1000's left but a 4 into 1 exhaust isn't going to give a meaningful power boost.
