Topic: Semi-Newbie looking at CB750 that's been sitting - what do I look for on engine?

Might be headed out to look at CB750 that ran (have verified video) 2 years ago before owner put it in storage (its outside storage but under cover) where its been sitting. Tires look dry rotted maybe from pics and some dirt on it but otherwise doesn't look that rough in pictures. Pricing recognizes condition to some extent, but its not a steal either. Figure I won't be able to try and start it. But what can I do to see if anything is frozen on it (rings, etc.) without having to get too much into it? Anything else in particular I should check? I'm familiar with Dirt Bikes and Mechanics, so not clueless - but new to the Road Bike game. TIA...Todd

Use the kick starter and see if it turns over.
If it does...it might need a rebuild.
If it doesnt, plan on an additional $1500+ to rebuild it

You should also check the engine block/case behind the front sprocket cover. It's held in by 2 screws...JIS #3 (not philips).

Check to see if there are any repairs or cracks.

Its a common area for chain slap damage.

Thanks to all. Found out its a 1979 so DOHC - which I know complicates matters and for many makes it not worth buying ;-) Still might go look at it for reference or see if he will "give" it away, but regardless appreciate the advice. Will file away for next time.

 You can tell a lot about an engine if it has not been cleaned by looking at how much oil and dirt has accumulated in critical area such as the head gasket and other spots prone to leaking and in need of attention.
