The internet is old enough to get drunk.
« on: October 20, 2016, 06:09:54 AM »
I'm sure in Europe this is nothing new because alcohol is treated within a jurisdiction of a less draconian legislative authority.

Here in the states I'm thinking that I obtained  my first e-mail address in about 1995. Surfed the web a bit at Kansas University, but not at Arkansas University in 1994 when researching. 21 years since hearing "looks up us on the world wide web" on npr about 1995.

How have things changed?

How about the two wheeled hobbies, e-bay, the your story  scarce part  thing you needed 35 years ago for the "running when parked circa 1980" that is now on the road. How did www help get it running? Collecting of 2 or three wheelers or of anything else you collect. Some things less scarce or that have become scarce again according to their e-bay sellers now.

I was just thinking this yesterday. In the early '90s in Seattle, I wasn't really buying and selling too much, just had a CB550 that I kept. Switched out bars, tuned it up, all stuff I could get at the dealer (or Bent Bike in Lynnwood, or the Chrome Spoke in Tacoma). Moved to AZ in 1997, and by that time I had started buying and fixing up and occasionally selling -- great yard here (Bob's), the yard in Rye was still operable and reasonable,  and I know someone who has about 50 bikes in his backyard (a former racer from the '50s) that I could pick over. But 1997 was also when I got on Ebay, and that changed everything. Not only are (many) parts easily found, they're usually somewhat reasonably priced or they don't sell. Then along came forums -- usually cheaper still, easier to deal with, etc. It's definitely made wrenching on old bikes easier.

That being said, I know where all the 350F and 400F carcasses are at Bob's, and heading there to roam around the acres of bikes is a joy the internet simply can't replace...

I think the internet started drinking early - probably had a habit of pounding a few before class in about 8th grade.

Before the 'net we had real junkyards - most of those have gone by the wayside around here since the web has also provided us with a world-wide garage sale. - Nothing goes to the junk yards because nothing is junk anymore.  SOMEONE, somewhere, will buy it.

I started programming computers in 1972....later someone advised me about buying ebay stocks, but I didn't think it would take off. Don't remember when I got on the web, but I was there early on...& I'm still drinking.

I will agree that junkyards have seemingly dried up since the net. There are still some, but not like they used to be.

We call them 'breakers' over here, but they amount to the same thing. I miss having to trawl through boxes of bits to find what I'm looking for - and more often than not I'd find a part I didn't know I was looking for, and come away with more than I had intended! We've still got auto jumbles (swap meets) for that I suppose, but you have to wait for those.

What pisses me off about the net is while it might be quick and convenient, you can't haggle like you can face to face. And then there's those scurrilous types who advertise a part that they haven't got, then source it after you paid for it....

On the bright side the internet brings you things like this... so that's awesome! If I was even remotely local to this I'd go.
