koni 76f-1302, correct fitment on a 550?
« on: October 21, 2016, 07:35:17 PM »
I just picked up a pair of koni 76f 1302 shocks off e bay for my 550. they are the old style konis
Can't find a lot of information about them. Pretty sure the1302 is correct for my bike (550k0 just to verify), and hoping these will keep the seat and ride height at stock levels. Ebay ad listed them as being for a 71-74 cb500 Are they shorter than the
76f-1296 that fits the 750? Any koni owners out there that can verify this? also, does the 1302 have adjustable rebound
like the 1296?  tia. for any information and verification.

the ones i have on my 550 are 76K-1302. they came with the bike so hard to tell but i assume the height is stock or close to stock. don't know what the "k" and "f" mean...
you can adjust spring preload but not rebound.

To answer your question: most probable and I would mount them without hesitation. Although OEM Honda rear shocks (I believe made by Showa) varied from one year to the next, Koni used to have shocks that covered various models. For instance: the 5-stage shocks my CB500K2 (ED, F, G) originally had, were unlike those on previous models and were the same as those on the CB550K2 and the CB550F1 (that is from framenumber 2010797 on!). The Koni 7610 1302 shocks have been on my CB500 for years now. I don't know about the suffixes: it can have to do with either there's an eye or clevis mount (see pic below). Maybe it has to do with chrome or not, or a chrome cover over the top or not. Mine are fully adjustable. Flatlander, have you looked under the rubber ring as shown in the picture? That's where I can dial the rebound damping. I have read somewhere that on older models that didn't have this ring, you could do it by compressing the rod and then turning it. Next week I'll try if I can find any further documentation either in my archive or by phoning Koni in Oud-Beijerland. https://www.koni.com/en-US/Home/?campaign=nl. Although Koni has sold the motorcycle shock division, they still make the best shocks in the world. BTW, it wouldn't surprise me if Ikon can give all information on former Koni models that were manufactured in the Netherlands. This is what I found at Ikon sofar: https://ikonshocks.co.uk/shop/7610-1302/ I'm pretty sure they're the same as your Koni's. Hope it will help you. Koni's were rebuildable and Koni's service used to be the best. Hope Ikon carries on this tradition.

here's a pic of my konis. i don't seem to have that rubber ring under the eyelet.

here's what geoff from ikon told me some time ago, in a different context:

Quote
The successor to the shocks you have was 76P-1302 which had a progressive rate spring. The 76P series ran through until about 1981. Then the next move was 7610P-1302 which ultimately came to be 7610-1302 and have a steel body rather than the alloy one. The 7610’s of course have always had the progressive rate spring.

DH: contact ikon if you need specific info. geoff there is very knowledgable about the old koni shocks.

he doesn't say it but my guess would be that the 76 series probably didn't have the damper adjustment yet, probably it was only added with the newer 7610 that you have, delta.

The irony is that I never really dived into it and so don't know what it is for. :D  Never tested it out. Mine are in position 2.
Ooops, forgot to inform that the 1302 has a length of 319mm and the 1296 339mm. Source:http://www.hobbyist.nl/ikon_schokdempers/7610_series/

Here are the ones I will soon have. do these have the adjustment internally for rebound like the 1296, where you bottom the
damper, and turn, counting the number of "clicks", each one resulting in a progressively stiffer rebound? They're a little rough,
but the seller assured me they were functional when removed and had no leaks or bent shafts. Seller had very good feedback score as well. I am hoping for only a clean up and possibly new fluid, and try them out. Thanks for the feedback so far gents..

Why don't you do something yourself like asking the seller? Really, Flatlander and I gave you all the info we have. That photo gives us no clue 'cause we can't see the top.

I did ask the seller the very question about adjustability. He didn't know.
Like I said earlier, politely, Thanks gents for the feedback so far. :)

The steel ones are the oldest, flatlanders are slightly less old, and those have both the internal damping adjustment, Delta's are the newest (still old :)  ) with the external adjusters.

Well, let's see...Maybe the fact that since they are adjustable, and through process of experimentation, the rider can determine
which settings best suit his size, riding style, and road conditions best. appologies Delta, I missed where you stated that
different settings might be possible for these particular shocks (read too fast). Pretty much done on this one..thanks to all. ;)

I will have more info on the topic of servicing these shocks in the next few months. A pallet load of Ikon shocks, springs, factory tools and parts just arrived this week and I will offer full service on all Ikon and many Koni shocks as soon as the last of my goodies arrive.

Stay tuned!

You mean the internal adjusting?
Not difficult but it takes some doing.
First set the spring to th softest setting.
Put the shock with the bottom mount in a vice, put a screwdriver through the top mount and loosen the big nut on the stem.
Pull the spring down with one hand and unscrew with the other hand the top mount,
Take care that the top mount doesn't go through the roof...
Take off the spring and the bumprubber, push the stem in the shock as far as possible. By turning the stem left or right you can adjust the damping in the usual way, lefty loosy, rightie tightie. You can feel when the  stem hooks itself in the adjuster in the shockabsorber. When finished put it all back together and go for a testride.

I bet yours are identical with mine (7610), so look under the top rubber ring.

I don't know if there is any, probably on the box they were packed in.

The big rubber thing inside the spring is there as a bumper to avoid damage. The rubber ring on top covers the adjuster dial. You can lift that rubber seal with a finger as shown here.
