CB 750
« on: October 23, 2016, 11:04:41 AM »
Hi...I'm new to the Forum and just purchased a CB750 and don't know much about it...or Honda's.  Is it good that it came in four (4) boxes?

Welcome...this is the only place for honest and most helpful assistance. Guys are willing to share and no question is stupid. We were all new once. As soon as you get like 5 posts you can post up pics. We really like pics here. If you take a look on the neck of the bike you will see a tag with a month and year build date (10/72). This will help us give you a hand on parts and stuff. Did it come with a title? Miles? Last run? Plans?

It's a 1969 CB750.   I have a feeling that if it doesn't have a tag on the right side that is not good?  The frame number matches the title and the motor number is very close to the frame number.  I do think the front end has been changed.  It has chrome "ears" and not the painted ones.  I don't know anything about the forks or front wheel.  I'll post some pictures when they let me.  The tach and speedo seem to be correct. Black headlight bucket = wrong.  And I think the correct front fender.   It says it has about 10,000 miles...good point I think.  Side covers correct...one badge missing.  There are a few things missing...seat (I wish I could swear a little about that one), wrong handle bar, and a few items I don't even know about.  It's stock...seems to have a good frame. It was last run about 10 years ago and ran when the gentleman I bought it from started to "restore" it.  My plans for it...I need help on that one.  Let me post some pictures and you tell me what I should do.  I need a few more post before I can do that.  Thank you for your interest.

The frame number says CB750-1005XXX and the motor says CB750E-1005XXX.  And I don't think the tank is original but the gentleman I bought it from said it was.  Again, when I can I will post a bunch of pictures.  I'm not sure what to do with the bike.  I will need to paint it for sure...

That sounds like a sandcast, very worth having.
If you look in the gas cap the metal below the opening should have some wrinkles in it if its original.

You better learn quickly and do not throw away nothing from those 4 boxes. You are owner of very rare bike so you have to be responsible ;). Where are you in Illinois?? I'm from Romeoville in case if you'll need help.

Wow that was as great find. Another sandcast in boxes. Worth big bucks and very rare. The early 750's had problems with breaking chains which would put a hole in the engine case by the front sprocket. Let's hope that is not the reason yours is in boxes. Pretty easy for you to check by removing the 2 screws for the front sprocket cover and look for a hole. Probably will need a impact driver to get those off which is normal. A regular screwdriver will probably round them off and then it will be real hard to get them off. Can you tell what color it was?
To shed a little light on it for you John:

The tank doesn't have wrinkles when I look down the gas filler neck but when I turn it over it does have wrinkles just "south" of that.  The original color was some kind of metallic red. I have a Polaroid picture from the gentleman I bought it from. It was when it was newer and running.  Let me do some research and I'll post some pictures tonight when I get off work.  Would it be a bad idea if I post pictures of the frame and motor number?  I'll also post the bottom of the tank and front forks/wheel. It was suppose to be running when the gentleman started to "restore" it. I'm from Shorewood and was just in Romeoville at the new F & F off of Weber.

The wrinkles on early tank are visible, looking into the gas cap hole. Tanks do get changed for various reasons..
As long as the serial number is under 7414, it should be a sandcast.
You can count the number of screws holding the clutch cover on to the motor, they have one less. The oil filter cover might be smooth, its the one to have.
Your fork lower legs the aluminum part, is different below the seal area, on the KO models. I recall you said they may be changed, but they may have just put chrome headlight ears on it.

Congrats, sounds like you stumbled on a very special bike.

Start a new thread in the Project area, we will be happy to help.

If you plan a proper restore, you can look at Markb's very detailed thread on the restoration of his Sandcast [it was in a museum]

There is also another website dedicated to Sandies....you should register your bike there...

Need a little help.  I just spend an hour starting a new post under Projects (with pictures).  I pressed Post and it disappeared.  I went back to Projects and it's not there.  Also...I can't Search.  Can anyone help?

I do one picture at a time and then hit "post". Then to add picture #2 I hit the "modify" tab and add pic #2. For some reason if I try to add more than 1 picture at a time it takes forever or does not work. The search has not been working and seems to be a hit and miss at the moment.
