New bloke in New Zealand
« on: October 11, 2016, 01:22:56 PM »
Hi Honda guys,
I have been doing a top end refresh on a CB500Four K1 for a mate of mine, who brought it in from the US. I googled a few questions I had re cam timing and found this site.

The bike has only 13,000 miles on and has been dry shed stored, so is in pretty good condition, but all the top end gaskets were leaking, carbs were seized solid with some weird varnish stuff that seems to be left when that US gas evaporates, and the valve seals were shot.

Otherwise it's sweet, still has the hone marks in the bores.  Very clean inside.

Very nice little motor to work on I have to say.  Always been a Triumph/BSA/Norton guy, so these are a bit new to me, but very impressed with how easy they are to work on.

Got my eye on one now to buy for myself.

Cheers
Rick

Welcome. Be mindful to replace the rubber pucks between the head and rocker cover too. They become hard over time and produce oil leaks profusely when not sealed up.

It would also be prudent to replace the rubber o-rings between the intake manifolds and the head. These are often not discovered or services and lead to vacuum leaks later.

Dehydrated gas turning to varnish? Hmmm... never heard of such a thing with our fine corn liquor here  ;D I wonder if you were to scrape it out and reconstitute would it make a decent spread atop some Vegemite to make that stuff edible by mortals?  ;)

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
