junk bike?
« on: October 24, 2016, 10:08:45 PM »
I was looking at some old Harley pics and I noticed it's cool to leave them in as found condition. Rusty chrome, faded paint and rotted tires, I'm thinking I have enough discard junk to build a junkpile 750. Maybe lean it against a tree so the neighbors can notice how cool I am. Rusty tank, mouse eaten seat, rust and rot as a theme. Something for the dog to pee on. Then again, somebody would just want to buy it, then I'd need to go to the barn for more junk.
Or maybe just throw it away and not be quite as cool.

The engine in my K0 actually had moss growing on it when I got it, the carbs were off and the intakes were stuffed with plastic shopping bags. It  leaned against a clothes line pole outside for years, it wasn't stuck at all.  The heat dried it up and now it looks like new.

They're only original once!  And those tires aren't rotted, they're NOS, from 1908.

IMHO original patina is nicer than just another boring shiny restoration.

There's a fine line there. While I agree "original patina" looks good, "rusted sittin' out behind the shed" just appears to be neglect to me.

No doubts.  Also patina does not mean unsafe or unreliable.

Don, how much stuff do you actually have?

Counting the 2 junk (chopped up and wrecked) fames I cut up, somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 750's, 2 dohc 750, 3 GL 1000's.  I tried a quick sell but I value them more than most buyers, there are 2 collections involved, one guy moving, one stopped riding and needed the cash. Right time right place, several times in a month.  Just a few nice ones and several projects.

It's all personal preference I guess but my wife has a cousin that rides one of the most beat up looking HD's I've ever seen. He didn't buy it new but it is the first bike he's ever owned and he's had it for at least 20 years now. It's an AMF era HD and it looks like it's been through hell and back, all the chrome is severely rusted, paint faded you name it but get this, that's precisely how he wants it and if you so much as point out any defect like the rusted fenders and he'll be in your face in a heartbeat. He's got a fully loaded late model Electra Glide but that beat up AMF HD is his baby and his first choice as his daily ride.

He probably remembers each scratch and dent and season that caused the rust.

I can understand, Dorothy was like that, it was the transmission problem that got her off the road eventually.

It turns out the offending cb has a title, whoda thunk it?  It might be the perfect base for a running rat bike. I'm putting it and two rolling frames in a dry storage building to make room here for my brothers 76 Goldwing, I'll continue to set aside parts worthy of such a project. The tank was stripped of most of it's paint then left outside for a couple years. It still has hippy decals where the stripper didn't soak in.

I'm 63 and look it, my good 750 is 47 and doesn't. That said, one looks older than me.
