weird charging CB...
« on: October 27, 2016, 09:36:46 AM »
So, about the finish up a 550.

But the charging is kinda strange...

Installed a combo RECT/REG.
Black wire - switched 12v
white wire - 12v to coil
green wire - ground to coil
3X yellow wire - to coil
Red wire - to Battery +

that's how I set it up, but no charge.
When I attach an extra ground from the green wire to the frame and give the white one from ENGINE side a direct feed from battery, battery charges just around 13.8V

But it gives continuity to the frame. I get sparks when I put direct 12v from battery to the white wire going to frame.
But only with the exrtra ground to green wire.

measered 4.8Ohm between white and green wire on engine side.

Does this make any sence? Any idea what can cause this?

Seems ya got your wires crossed.

Doublecheck the install instructions and have the bikes wiring diagram ready.  Go over things one more time

Consult this interactive wiring scheme: http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring500.html Cancel all but 'alternator, etc'.

my thoughts too, tried different things but haven't found the right solution yet.

Don't want to fry it either...

And thanks Deltarider, but that's the original diagram, I have an combo rect/reg so color's don't match...

Is there a grren wire in the r/r harness, I don't see one in the pic. If not: the case has to be securely grounded, generally through the mounting bolts. make sure these go into the frame or a solid bracket screwed to the frame, not a clamp. You can use a ground wire... I use ring crimp terminals attached using an external toothed lockwasher between the ring and the r/r case, and between the other end ring and the frame. That washer pierces any paint or anodizing and makes a solid connection.

Bodi, the green wire is there, just hiding behind the others like a creep.
