I want to paint a caliper and want it to come out as close to the original Honda black caliper texture/semi-gloss as I can get.I have used Duplicolor semi-gloss black engine enamel #DE1635 on other things and then heat-cured the parts in an oven and that came out very similar(only too glossy after I removed it from the oven) to what I'm looking for as far as semi-gloss;I don't want high gloss..
I like the idea of caliper paint which is tougher(higher heat also) than the engine enamel plus resistant to brake fluid.
What have you used before on some of your restore projects ?

How about a semi gloss power coat? That would be much more durable than paint. I can't comment on the finish matching though, but on my dual disc conversion, I had a buddy powder coat one caliper and I got a repro from DSS and they match very well.

Caliper specific paint, or powder are your best bets.
The majority of rattle cans will bubble when they contact brake fluid.
They look nice at first....  ::)  ;D

Yeah,I'd like to spray rattle can w/ caliper paint but want to match that nice oem semi-gloss.I think pure gloss black is just too shiny for a brake caliper & flat isn't shiny enough..

The VHT chassis and roll bar paint looks pretty close to the original frame paint on my cb550. It will get ruined with brake fluid though.

Have you tried VHT #VS-739 'satin' black caliper paint? I just wondered how close it comes to the satin black oem Honda black ?

The PC guy I used to go to turned bad on me,otherwise yes i would like that type of 'matte' black/satin durable coating.

I've been using a powder called "black magic" from powderbuythepound.com

It's the perfect blend of semi matte finish and extremely close to vintage finish color.

These are two different cable operated mechanical caliper bodies(mid 70's Honda),the one on the left I just touched-up w/ a brush(after spraying some into the cap) on the small, round 'knobby' outer part of the caliper cover using the Semi-gloss Duplicolor DE1635 black and you see how it contrasts(much more glossy) w/ the original Honda coating behind it.The one on the right I prepped and then sprayed w/ Duplicolor 'low gloss' black DE1634;the color on the DE1634 'low gloss' looks a bit more kind of 'reddish' and less dark black as the original oem Honda color one is on the left. These Duplicolor paints are both engine enamel and were cured in an oven at 200 for 3/4hr.

Stev-o,
Do they carry that VHT VS-739 in either Advance auto or Autozone ? They don't  have O'Reilly's around here..

Yes, that is what I use.  Very happy with it.

I think I may have made a mistake in the stock# of this VHT paint,is it instead #SP739 ?

The vht stuff. It's an 82 frame but it is the same paint I used on my 550 frame. If you just want to touch up areas it's perfect.

Btw don't spray in high humidity. It will get frosty... and then if you bake it, like I did, it will get smooth, and highly gloss.

Steve,
That's good for the black on the frame:#SP670 VHT gloss black,ok. Thanks for uploading the pics Steve.
I think I'll be getting some VHT #SP739  next time I paint a caliper according to 'Stev-o',I think they call it "satin black" and here's hoping it'll be a good match for the oem black on the calipers.

You used it to paint the frame, did you use a heatlamp to cure it after you noticed it getting frosty in high humidity ?

I actually put the part in a powdercoating oven for a few minutes but on the frame if I had to I would use a heat gun. I've done it previously when I had an issue.
