Stand Back I'm going to Science!
« on: October 28, 2016, 04:04:37 PM »
Bought my 2nd gallon of Metal Rescue rust remover.
These old ears aint been cleaned behind in decades.
I know these rust removers are a hot topic, like oil.
So I'm gonna put this one to the test here.
Bottle says safe on skin and safe on chrome.
Wish me Luck!

Be fun to see your results. I would probably knock a little of that rust down with soapy water and very fine steel wool first. Hope it works well. How much is that stuff a gallon ?

It's 25 bucks a gallon and reusable..

Not the cheapest option for derusting tanks.

They'll turn out nice. I've used Metal Rescue a bunch of times with great results. You do need to keep it above a certain temp. when using it which it says on the container. I kept mine under a heat lamp.

It is kind of expensive but I ordered 2 gallons, if I remember correctly, and Amazon accidentally sent me like 6, haha.

It took me days to derust some tools with that stuff... just do it electrolytically.

Zapping the chrome with electricity won't strip the chrome too will it?

Take note***** it is only safe on your skin before use. I used some and then got bad rashes on my hands. When I contacted them they confirmed that corrosive/ irritant condition can exist after usage...depending on what you are using it on. (I used it on chrome). It reacts with the metals that you use it on.
They sent me back my money. They said that they do not put this warning on the product because it would scare potential buyers away.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! USE GLOVES!

Yeah, forgot to towel off my hands last night and a few minutes later it started to really bother me.

But so far so good, parts are still in the bath.

Have you tried going over those with 0000 steel wool and Windex or chrome polish? You'd be AMAZED at how well the old Honda chrome shines up. Maybe try a soft brass brush on the crusty spots. I'd be interested to see what happens with a little elbow grease.

Avoid steel wool.  The particles can embed and cause rust.  Stainless steel brushes, brass brushes, metal polish, all good choices.

Not trying to be smart, I've got no idea of prices in the US - but if you add up what you've spent on chemicals, plus man hours, does it work out that much cheaper than getting them rechromed? Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, prices of rechroming are ridiculous over here.

I hold no delusion that these ears will look new once I pull em out.
But - this has been a relatively stress free way to de rust the worst of it.  The bottle claims to have a future rust inhibitor.  Time will tell.

I don't think I'd be able to afford chrome service locally either.  It's few and far between round here anyway.

I've  NEVER had problems with stuff re-rusting using that method. The 0000 steel wool is very fine and won't leave scratches. Maybe it's the protective nature of the polish I use, but everything I've ever done this way stays clean and shiny. Just my personal experience.
I do occasionally detail my bikes, so keeping road grime off and a protectant on it probably helps....wax, chrome polish, etc.

Vinegar which is available from your local grocery store is the s**t. I buy white distilled vinegar by the gallon for around $2.00 ish a gallon and keep a 5 gallon bucket with lid filled continuously. I derust parts constantly in this stuff and it is amazing. Just spray the residue off after a few days with the garden hose and neutralize in a water and baking soda bath, rinse and spray with WD-40 for chrome parts and paint for non chromed parts, etc..

Done the vinegar or coca cola trick on small parts, nuts and bolts.
While it does work, i can't say I saw dramatic results in just 12 hours.

Update;

Yes, there is pitting.  Lucky its on the inside where the sun dont shine.

Solution has almost turned completely black.  Which is signal that it's about had enough of this gig.

I'll be happy to get the bike put back together.  Really need to make a decision on a headlight bucket.

I  soaked some rusty steel engine screws etc in white vinegar once in a plastic coffee container and of course I forgot about them for a very long time. I was amazed and shocked when I went to retrieve my now what must be shiny bits and it was basically a blob of unrecognizable junk  :D Try it sometime on some junk screws and you will be surprised also  ;)

Haha, yup. Bought 2, sent me 6, paid for 12. Maybe this wasn't the deal I thought it was...

It is safe to leave parts submerged for days without harming the metal or paint.

Just watch out for red paint. Apparently some red paint is colored by some sort of red oxide, so MR will discolor that.

They are straight, many if not most offered on ebay are dented from a spill and may have shiny chrome and look great but your turn signal stalk is not going to be straight or level many times and I do not believe there is any way most of us would be able to attempt to correct that problem.
