toolbox?
« on: November 02, 2016, 04:22:39 PM »
Hi all

As a newbie, any suggestion on what I should always take with me on a ride on the bike, for quick fixes/checks on the side of the road if anything happens? Which tools to you always keep and which parts?

Thanks!

+1

I stopped my Saturday ride when I saw a rider at the side of the road, seat off, putzing with his Yammie 650 single. First thing he asked for was a spark plug wrench. When my Honda wrench didn't fit his plug, he asked if he could use my phone. He called his bride to bring the pickup truck.

My own ride has been misbehaving recently  (very unusual) so I am carrying extra condensers for the time being.

This summer I kept a book under the seat. Really made passing the time bearable as I waited on the trailer all those days.

AAA Gold Card and a Cell Phone. Just had to use it on my KTM ADV 1190 R last week in PA. Got a rear flat and used my plug kit and air pump. That worked for 100 miles but the plug let loose and it was time to call AAA. They towed me to  Camp Hill KTM  who had a tire and had me on my way in short time.

I used to carry a lot more than I do now, but at minimum I have:

- A spare set of plugs, with a plug wrench
- multitool style screwdriver - most screws are phillips on my 750, I like to have something to snug up something that might have come loose, like a carb boot, or I need to get at the ignition or behind the clutch cover for whatever reason.
- 10/12/14 wrenches. That covers most of the bolts on my bike. Not all, but most...
- Allen wrench. I changed all my engine bolts to stainless allen bolts, so I bring one incase I need to get a cover off
- Spare fuses

That's about it. If your bike is in pretty good tune, no need to carry an entire tool box. If I'm touring, that's a different story and I bring more stuff. But going out for a couple hours? Easy to overthink it.

you guys are funny  ;D ;D ;D

as I come from the vintage scooter world, I am quite used to a number of repairs on the side of the road... condensers, carb fixes, cable changes etc... so I wondered which tools and parts I could keep with me in case of need!

thanks markreimer, all that will go with the cell phone and book I guess  ::)

Use only wrenches from the kit when you work on the bike, that will give you an idea what to carry with you.

Also spare parts such as plug for the oil galley if you have a pressure gauge there, chain connecting link if your chain is not endless, one spark plug etc...

Spare screws in case you missed one or one works its way out...  You really need to double check the bolts and screws you have touched in any maintenance before testing bike and a few times after that work.  Ideally never a problem, until you don't do it and then Murphy strikes.

I know a little overboard.  But, it would be unreasonable to double check your work, just like the lugnuts on a car's wheels should be checked after several miles when a wheel has been removed and replaced.

One of the things I've added to my tool kit is a cheap Harbor Freight digital voltmeter. They are a surprisingly capable instrument, compact, and cheap! Mine was "free with any purchase"... :)

I bought a new Honda tool set for my CB750, mostly for the slim plug tool. I added simple allen tools for those bolts. Spare relays since I have relays for head light, ignition and horn. Finally fuses for the std fuse box as well as the new hanging mini fuses for relays.

Many riders have a small package of chain lube. Very important during longer rides and rainy conditions.

I replaced the OEM sized 14A GEL battery with a lower 11A version to get more space for everything, Hondaman ignition module included on top of the battery.
I'll include spare condensors. I did not use any last 2 years, maybe better with them and I know they can fail.

I'm curious if the battery will work as good as before when I'll use a more powerful starter motor, CB900 0.8kW, std is 0.6kW that might be too weak for 1000cc CR10.5:1.

One good thing is to always have the bike in order. NOT use old worn tires that can easy be flat. Good drive chain that is always lubed and enough with fuel. Check of the fuel lines is a good idea too. I had one thet came loose and sprayed fuel on the rear tire when I entered a sharp corner. Close to visit the trees beside of the road! Like oil on the road.

EDIT: Pics of smaller battery. The larger 14A is 165 mm in height, 11A is 145mm

$5 for gas. Saved my ass the other day - I pulled to gas station and realized my credit card and driving license are with my hunting permit at home.

Spare ignition key is not a bad idea either.

I took that picture as saying you should carry a spare bike with you in your tool box. Maybe overkill for around town but makes sense for longer distances.

On longer rides, I bring pretty much everything I'd need for a roadside repair; so that's not only a full toolkit as others have mentioned (though I like to bring sturdier tools than the OEM kit) — but some critical spares, like a points plate (saved my ass recently), zipties, electrical tape, a small multimeter, some wire, etc., etc. Lotta guys here keep their machines in tip-top shape, but for those of us bouncing around on leaking, rattling claptraps from the 1970s....oh, wait a second... :P
