A buddy and I were pondering this the other day as we were looking for riding gear.

For me, I think the Kevlar Jeans options are still a bit of a mess. I find myself having to sacrifice protection for value or looks. The ones that do seem to protect you properly are either hideously expensive or incredibly ugly.

Warm weather gear? Protective under layers? More vintage-inspired gear?

Curious to see what you guys think.

Plain leather jackets - I guess "vintage".  Mine's not vintage, it's just 30 years old :) I'm not comfortable with all of the "Armor" inside jackets today. I know it's there for protection but they feel so stiff to me - I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to move to maneuver out of the way of the crash the armor is protecting me from. or something . . .

Waist-length heavy leather jackets. Without all the stuff.  I found a replacement, but it's not as heavy as my old one.  It does have a concealed carry pocket! :) That just cracks me up - THAT pocket has a snap on it, but not the exterior side pockets.

I really appreciate the removable panels on my joe rocket jacket.  Sleeves Come off to reveal mesh arms and chest/back vents.  Great in summer!

Footwear though, still havent found a bit of footwear I absolutely have to have.  They either look like workmans boots, basketball shoes, or sidi italian track only type.

You're absolutely right about the jeans.  I picked up a pair cheap at the swap meet.  Paid to have the legs modified (ridiculously baggy lower legs)  inquired if the seamstress could be hassled to add some additional kevlar where I felt it was lacking.  Alas, she talked herself out of the work with the "it would cost more than you could benefit" phrase.

I was going to facetiously say this

but it turns out that you can still get a modern equivalent. Who knew?

I love looking at those old adds and prices. Need a new thread with all kinds of that old vintage stuff to look at and ponder. Be crazy riding around with that face shield twirling away in front of you. Hope they made a million bucks  :)

JOFAs - or at least a universal equivalent.

Bell Rogues look the part, but only works with that mushroom-top helmet.

I googled JOFA (because I had no idea what it was) and got the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance  ;D

what do you all think of the idea of a Kevlar under shirt with (or without) pads that can be worn under anything. Flannel, rain jacket, hoodie etc. And still keep you protected from impact and slide.

Is this a jofa a chin and mouth protector for open face helmets?

Knee & shin guards that have reactive protection that breathes made for people with large legs... armor is worthless if you can't wear it or wont wear it.
chest protection seems to be skipped in many jackets and I guess if you have a zipper down the middle it poses a small challenge.

Jofa was a company who primarily made hockey equipment but from the looks of it also made that. I have a fairly recent (about 8 years or so) leather jacket from none other than HD. I feel like a plug wearing it on my Honda though.

That visor is awesome.

Google "jofa mouthguard vintage".
They were used on open face (3/4) helmets by motocrossers and then started being used by us BMX Rats for racing as well - until Simpson, Bell, and JT Racing started making lighter BMX-specific full face helmets.
JT Racing, Ame, also made them. Scott and Oakley made versions that snapped on the bottom of your goggles.

Speed and Strength make flannels with integrated armor. I like them, maybe paired with some Saint Unbreakable gear but FUGGGHH it's expensive! So I just put on my dumb looking riding suit and buy more parts with the money I saved.  LOL

Not trying to be a pain...
Revzilla has a good article about modifying leather gear and caring for leather gear, they list some good makes of gear that will be durable and last.  Speed and Strength isn't on that list and Joe Rocket either, they don't use the right leather selections that AlpineStars, Dainese, and many other brands do...so that is often the danger in going with trendy or boutique like brands.
To quote from the leather care article:
ZLA: You mention high quality leather. What's the difference?
JT: We can really tell the difference when working with leathers of different qualities. It makes a huge difference in the alteration process because it affects how pliable the leather is, but we also see the difference in terms of how long the leather lasts and we see the effects of leather maintenance, as well. Companies like Alpinestars, Dainese, REV’IT, and Ku#$%*ani use the nicest leather, which is taken from better cattle and from the sides of the animal, instead of the belly. When it comes to brands like Joe Rocket or Speed and Strength, you can tell the leather just isn’t as easy to work with and won’t stand the same tests of time.

Maybe these flannels are good but I've always been wary of their products.

The company Revzilla had do the leather suit alterations was Anthony's Leatherworks in California is the preferred repair company for Dainese, Alpinestars,  REV’IT & SPIDI.

Flannel will never beat track suit leather in a game of gravel pavement steel.

I agree... the flannel with Kevlar is nice and all, but good old fashioned leather seems to do the best job against abrasion.

I WANT the equivalent of Duluth firehose jeans w/ kevlar, in 40/36, in dark grey/black for all the other days.

Havent found anything just yet.

I wear logging jeans from Baileys and the denim fabric is superior to Duluth firehose.  heck new pair of wild ass loggers will stand on its own - when was the last time you seen that?

I agree with all that, I'll never buy anything from Speed and Strength or Saint. They look cool but the price is crazy. I ride in a Olympia Stealth armored riding suit all year in CA and I don't care if anyone thinks it isn't cool, but I mean really, who doesn't like grey and florescent yellow??  ;D

How about a heavy case hardened chain with a multiple layer Kevlar  sheath each layer independent of the other. Then an outer covering the chain with a padded UV stable cover.
A lock for it impervious to freeze methods of breaking it . It also taking a very very long time to grind through and imperious to bolt cutters of any size.
