Wurth vs Yamaha Carb Cleaner
« on: February 08, 2006, 07:35:44 AM »
I have seen many posts on here (and have even written a FAQ) about Yamaha Carb Cleaner and how it doesn't dissolve plastic and rubber etc etc...

"You can buy it at your local Yamaha dealer" I wrote.

I went to my local Yamaha dealer (Woking, Surrey) and he said:

"Nah mate - we don't use that. We use Wurth cleaner as a dip.  It's the best!"

So.

Wurth cleaner anyone??

Hi Steve, Wurth has agood reputation for tools and fixing, with me at least, so the carb cleaner ought to be good, just wasnt about when I was spannering--we just used cleaning bath with HP air or cellulose thinners and replace the seals

Hey Steve, last year when I went through my carbs I went to the local Yamaha dealer for their product and they didn't have it. This is in a city in California with 200,000 + population. I ended up buying a jug of Berrymans for $15 at an auto parts store. Its nasty stuff and you have to strip those carbys down but it does it's job.

The Yamaha dealer by me has a shelf devoted solely to YCC- they use a ton, and sell a ton and a half... most times I have to call ahead to make sure they have it. I get em 4 at a time, and keep em in a gallon jug (usually from my Rotella- I use Rotella T 15-40 in everything!).
I've tried Berryman's and Gunk, and neither one can hold a candle to YCC. Never heard of Wurth, think I'll note that and call around this weekend... always looking for the next big thing! :D

For the U.S. crowd, Wurth is a German manufacturer. Their promary line is fasteners, but they handle a lot of chemical stuff. Very pricey. For instance a rattle can of their wheel paint retails at about $20.00, I have seen it on the 'Net for about $15.00. Its only advantage is that it matches the silver on almost all Euro alloy car wheels, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, etc. So, figuring 3 cans of paint and 2 of clear, you are looking at about $100.00 to paint a set of wheels. Although the ads talk about "fine German nozzles", my only interest is the color.

Does anyone know where you can get Yamaha Carb Cleaner in the UK? I have tried local agents and they have never heard of it.
Just done 1 carb using a generic Carb Cleaner spray and Gunk but it isn't the most efficient method, would prefer to soak the rest.

if we can't get our hands on yamaha carb cleaner, is there anything else out there that we can get hold and use safely besides carb cleaner aerosols?     mick.

Hi Steve,
IMO the Yamaha carb cleaner is better than the Wurth.
I've used both.
Wurth is cheaper (in Britain) but you use more of it (need a couple of trys to get carbs clean)
Wurth also give better discounts for quantity orders ( I used to have a Wurth account)
You cant even order the Yamaha stuff without being a Yamaha dealer
I'm pretty sure they have never used the Yamaha stuff or they wouldn't make the statement.
The Yamaha dealer can order it for you, but, I'm pretty sure it will have to be a case minimum order, (I think thats 6 liters, which is expensive to have sitting on a shelf)
They are trying to sell you what they have.

So is this Yamaha cleaner something that the state of California would frown on? I can get Berryman's here which seems to be more caustic than the Yamaha. I noticed that alot of the more powerful chemical cleaners that I used to get in Wyoming aren't available here in California. I remember a product I got in Wyoming called Oil Eater. That was the bomb for cleaning engines but you can't find it anywhere here.

You can probably order this stuff at: http://wueko.wuerth.com/       The site translates into english too.

I've asked my dealer for the Yamaha carb-dip as well, but they wanted silly amounts of cash for it. In the end I decided it was not worth buying the stuff, and I had all my carbs cleaned ultrasonic. They came back llike new, and the guy only chaged me $30.

And this is the Yammy stuff --> http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/apparel/apscitemdetail/3/122/all/3/322/detail.aspx

I seem to recall that the folks in the Great White North (Canada) either have a real hard time getting this, or it's just not avaible there.  Which leads me to think that Kalifornia may have an issue with it also.  I have no clue about it's international availability.  I've used this, but not the Wurth, so I can't compare.  The Yammy stuff does clean real well and hasn't eaten any of the rubber bits that I've thrown in.  If you leave things in too long, the aluminum will discolor though.
