1977 cb550 fork oil seal
« on: November 05, 2016, 06:36:28 PM »
Hello. I have a question regarding the fork oil seals on a 1977 cb550, for anyone who might be able to help please.I am wondering about the depth of the seal? The measurement of the recess height to the oil seal ring is 15mm. the seal height is only 11mm.that leaves 4mm. Doesn't it matter that there can be lateral movement? thanks.
Please see photo.

Saw the same thing during my fork rebuild.  Other bikes have washers below the seal, for some reason 550's don't.

These seals fit snug in the lowers, the circlip keeps em from riding up and out.

Thanks Bombermann650. Just to confirm? that it is ok to have the 4mm gap between the fork oil seal and the seal ring clip, Correct?
Also my forks don't have a circlip like I'm familiar with ,it's more like  a wire ring clip. Mike.

I remember comparing my new seals against the ones I took out, vaguely (half bottle of cabernet imbibed) they were close enough in size and material that I went ahead and squished em in.

Applied heat to the rim and pushed it in with a big socket.  Just below the keeper ring line.  Used a finger to nudge it up against said keeper.  Filled the new seal with heavy grease (trick i learned from a local old timer) and went to work putting it back together.
