Do I need two camshaft Holders?
« on: November 05, 2016, 09:46:01 AM »
Hey guys,

During the teardown of my '76 CB750 , I discovered that my camshaft holder cap cracked (suspected oil jet blockage) and tore up my Cam, this in turn tore up the camshaft holder.
Having trouble tracking down a replacement (any ideas?) but once I do, Honda lists both Left and Right sides as the same part number.  Once I find one, do I need to replace both? ( the Left side is still in good condition) Or will I be ok just replacing the damaged one?

Oh and since I got you here, any recommendations for an aftermarket cam? Just looking for a bump in performance, would like to keep the rest of the motor stock for now.

Thanks a bunch! happy Riding!

Depends on what the other side looks like. Saw some on EBay.

ANY cam you replace it with will be better than a 76 K! LOL. F2/F3 should even show you some nice improvement. Even early F or early/late K. You can get a milder 'bolt in' or a bigger 'dial in' stick. Webcam, Megacycle, Big Jay at APE, CycleX. Replace your springs too if you like to spin it up to prevent possible valve float engine destruction.

Yikes that cam end is gnarly-got one like it around here also. One thing to remember all that missing metal went somewhere and that somewhere is inside your engine  ;) A good cleaning out may be in order, especially a couple of the main oil galleys.

Yea I had the same horrible thoughts and foresaw massive bottom end damage, but ive got the case halfs split and the heads, pistons, and cylinders checked and spec'd by a machinist.  Everything looks good. Oil filter must have really been doing its job! lol.

The only fragments I found were in the Oil pump screen, and they looked and felt plastic not metal, my guess from either a bad gasket or cam chain tensioners. Then again im no expert.

How many rockers did it take out?
Mine did that, probably worse.. Almost all my debris stayed up on the head..some may have gone in the filter, but the bottom of filter was far cleaner than I thought it would be..

Good idea to find a complete set with everything mounted on the head. I have seen several sellers on eBay selling both cam holders with rockers, shafts and cam for a good price. Within US very low shipping cost.

Since I have seen blocked oil supply cases on this forum, I have bought extra cam holders when I find a set. I have 3 extra sets just for sure. Extra rockers too since I have replaced some of them before when hard chrome start to flake off.

The left and right cam holders are interchangeable. My left one was chewed up much like yours, but the right was fine. I replaced the left tower and cam, and kept the right. The key is to be sure the caps for the cam bearings are included because they're matched to the base (with an alphabetical stamp).

My lower end was also clean and in spec, so it looks like oil starvation in the head is a typical problem. It's apparently caused by the small oil galleys in the head. It's probably advisable to pull the head and clear them at regular intervals.
