Motorcyclist Rear-ended in I-5 rush hour.
« on: November 08, 2016, 01:14:00 PM »
Luckily the guy walked away but the bike didn't fair so well. This is my biggest fear about riding is when you're a sitting duck in traffic or at a light and can't do anything to get out of the way. Then some jackass not paying attention slams into the back of you.

Geez, that sucks, lucky he is not injured badly.
Good thing his gloves and phone didnt slip over the edge there.
Did the SUV run over the bike after the rider came off, almost looks like by the amount of Tupperware bits.
Edit looks like the SUV slowed to go around bike and the white car behind nailed the SUV.

Guy is real lucky.  Here in the Detroit area a lot of drivers would have bailed out (If the car was not drivable enough to get away) and took off.   >:(

Hard to tell who hit who, but damn that could have been worse. He just surfed that sh*t storm out of harms way.

Did the woman with the cans hit him or the SUV?

She have her right arm in a splint or cast.  Couldn't tell if she hit him or the suv.  He was very lucky.  Problem with accidents is you initially only feel the things screaming the loudest after they get better or not complaining then you end up feeling the other injuries or you don't discover them until much later.  Had several injuries from a rear end collision and it was a couple hours or hour after the accident the problem started showing itself, major whiplash with neuropathy down the right arm into the hand.  Other stuff showed up later after neck injury had calmed down on pain, not hours but nearly a week later.
I worked through the pain as much as possible trying to get the job done.  Accident bent the car I was in... unibody design from mid 60s and it buckled the sheet metal behind the driver's door in front of the rear wheel up high on the side.  Dented in about an inch.  Had car straightened and repainted that rear quarter...was a 2 door.  Wish I still had that car...lots of fun.

He's lucky. Pretty rotten driving/riding conditions for any motorist. He could have done himself a favor by wearing some conspicuity gear to help him be more visible. Might have helped prevent him from being a bumper to a car.  :-\

If the suv was pinballed, gear color would not matter.  I have driven I5 a few times and I hate its traffic.  Flowing at 70-75 and then down to 5 or less and then back to 70 in the matter of 2-3 miles...better have great brakes there.

Lane splitting may have prevented the entire accident here. You guys in California are lucky!

He did something after he stopped the bike, like shoulder checked or saw in the mirror at last second what was coming..maybe... He just moved a funny way just before impact.

Typical PNW rainy/gray day.   All vehicles, white/silver/grey/tan......they ALL blend in to the same plain color of the day like that.
Really hard to see anyone when your wind/face shield is mist-sprayed, let alone when you're paying attention to anything other than driving safely  ::)
I also notice many squids remove the larger brake and tail light assemblies for an underbody kit, making these lights as small as possible.
I dont know if this was the case here, but it sure wouldnt have helped.
I added bright LED plate holder brake lights in hopes cagers will see me sooner.

Yep, washington drivers read the bit about "police are targeting brightly colored vehicles for speeding and insurance companies increase premiums for red colored cars"
So they went about buying all the cars that naturally camouflage with the surrounding area.
Real smart move that was.

When riding, never be the guy at the end of the line, split to the front or hang off to the side/rear of another stopped vehicle if its feasible. Glad he walked away.

A member on the CX500 forum was rear-ended  while waiting at a traffic light twice in Florida in less than 2 years time.  Both bikes totalled.  One was in great shape so he bought another and dropped the motor in it.  Crazy stuff.  Had big tail lamps and even added a pair of brake lamps to a top box.

Not a safe state to deal with.  I have driven I5 in California and in the LA area was where it exhibited that traffic behavior...not normally very rainy there but you better slow way down when it does rain as all the oil on the road turns it very slippery.

Watch your mirror hold brake light on, and plan escape route.
In a car once, highway traffic had stopped for a tow truck..backed up 1/4 mile, i was just past a low rise..behind a van with boat on trailer with huge outboard. I turned to far left to be out of line of the prop.
Next car hit us at about 40ish miles perhour, we clipped the corner of the boat..instead of it coming thru the windshield.... Cop told me I did everything right..
I usually check mirror now and dont feel comfy till two cars stop behind me..

Oh they do that around here as well! Fockers. The driver couldn't go anywhere because of congested traffic, luckily on this day. From the looks of that old car I hope he had insurance which is mandatory here. Doesn't mean people buy it though.

My guess is the white car was texting behind the wheel and just not paying attention. Looks to me like the beater white car hit the gray subaru at full speed, in turn hit the biker and the white lexus. I try and stop to the right or left of the car in front of me hopefully giving the guy behind me an option other than smacking the back of my bike. At least here the subby was kind of a buffer, could've ended up a lot worse.

I don't think I could stay calm  >:(

I was out on my friend's dt-50 just a couple weeks ago and the car coming up to me came to a LOUD screeching halt that lasted just over a second.

It was over before I had any adrenaline reaction, stopping about 10 feet behind me.
