Clutch Starter Wear - Advice needed!
« on: November 06, 2016, 11:20:59 AM »
I was examining the rotor on my CB750 today and noticed was the absence of the roller spring and cap on the starter clutch. Are these recessed in the clutch itself? I see 3 recesses, but there is definitely no springiness there.

So I went on to dismantle the rotor - removing the 3 screws to detach the clutch from the rotor, releasing the clutch side plate at the same time. The plate was quite warped, laying flat on the rotor in one position only. It also had some noticeable scoring where the rollers roll. (pic 1). The inside of the clutch where the rollers sit is also clearly scored (pic 2).

Any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated.

There are 3 separate pieces:  roller, spring and spring cap. 3 of each. You should get a kit such as this:

As far as that plate, just turn it over.

Agreed, new rollers/caps/springs but the body and plate look usable. I've seen springs and caps missing before but have no excellent theory for how or why they departed.
The attaching bolts must be hella tight... loctite them, and I recommend staking as well. If they go loose - what happens is not pretty.
The springs and caps push the rollers in contact with the drive hub. They wedge against it to turn the crank when starting. Once running, centripedal force pushes them out and in where they don't touch the hub. They shouldn't really wear much at all. This much end wear on the body and cap suggests a too-strong spring or a lot of time at idle, where the rollers aren't thrown out very strongly. Was this a Shriners parade bike by any chance?

Jerry, Does that kit fit the earlier 750s as well?

Good question. I did not cross reference the Honda part numbers.

EDIT      O.E. numbers for those parts are the same back to k1.  Ad reads from 76-78.  This is a good price. I had trouble finding it in kit form unless ordered from the UK for some reason.

Thanks for the help guys.

Looking again I see that inside the clutch are what seem to be three small recessed pins, the centres of which have a hole. Is it possible that the spring and cap have seized in there? The tops of what I think may be the caps are recessed to different depths.

I have left the thing soaking in brake fluid overnight to see if it frees up anything.

Well, there you go; I wasn't wrong!

A night in BF, some heat and judicious use of daddy's little helper (aka a hammer) produced what you see in the pic.

Apart from the one that is nowt but a few bits, the other springs were wound around each other. I'm sure this isn't "normal" wear and tear.

Ever find oyurself wondering, "who would do such a thing?

Guess its new springs then!!  :D
