1972 CB350f Fork Shrouds / Covers
« on: August 29, 2016, 10:40:26 AM »
I need some help here. Does anyone know how to remove the chrome fork shrouds / covers without damaging them? Then once removed is it possible to have them re-chromed without damaging the plastic/nylon pips?

Thanks
Eric

Yes they definitely come off. I've removed a few of them.
Firstly spray heaps of penetrating oil inside (CRC or similar) as they will be stuck at the bottom. Leave overnight.
Next with a soft rubber mallet or the soft rubber handle of a hammer (don't use the hammer end!!) gently tap in an upward motion ( ie in the direction they will be coming off) and only tapping at the bottom joint area as they are supported at that point. Move around so it releases evenly and once starting to move just wobble back and fowards gently by hand until off.
Yes once off they can be rechromed but they are light metal and the polisher has to be gentle
Hope that helps
Chris

On my CB350K4 twin  ones ( very similar) I wrapped a single turn of inner tube rubber around them and then gently clamped on two  hose clips with the clamp bits 180 degrees opposed. Then tap on the clamp bits gently and they should ease off without distortion or chrome damage.

Having got the shrouds off and without damage I might add. Thanks for the tip Ash. The next question is re-chroming. I've them to a chap in Derby, but he's very reluctant to have a go at them as the shrouds are so thin. Has anyone had a pair done and by who?
