I've done it again - not used the bikes long enough that the clutches are stuck. I ran the bikes to get the oil hot, clunked it gear and started pushing on the rear brake hoping to break the clutch free - only stalled the motors. Besides taking the whole thing apart are there any gentle methods you know to free it up?

IN THE PAST, I WOULD PUT IN GEAR, PULL THE CLUTCH IN (BUNGEE CORD IT TO THE HANDLEBAR) AND ROCK THE BIKE BACK AND FORTH, ENGINE NOT RUNNING. I DIN'T LIKE DROPPING IT IN GEAR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, SEEMED A BIT ROUGH ON THE TRANNY. KEEP THE CLUTCH BUNGEE'D OVERNIGHT MIGHT HELP TOO.

Get ready like for a burnout, pull in clutch , put in gear.. They either break loose or you climb the wall...

I tie the clutch handle back to the grip like Steve mentioned and let it sit that way when there is a problem.That in combination with starting the engine and getting some hot oil circulating usually does the trick. Rocking the bike in 3rd gear or so with engine off and clutch tied back and hot oil helps also. Doubt you will have to open her up Cliff.

Doing anything with the engine running is bad, for the tranny, and for safety in general. Steve F has it right. Engine off, grab clutch, in gear, rock back and forth.

At the risk of starting yet another oil thread, this is clearly an oil issue. I had this problem with a CB125. It took me 2 or 3 oil changes to flush out the bad oil, but the issue did go away.

I wouldn't know what oils are bad, but if you've used Rotella for a while, I'd suspect it. I've had great luck with the Honda HP4 w/ Moly. Never a stuck clutch, and noticeably smoother shifting.

So if u use that hp4 oil I take it there's no need to use the zinc additive?

Honda lube has more zinc than other brands, but an additive would still be beneficial

No. But don't use it in just any bike. I have a CT70 w/ a centrifugal clutch, and it will screw that up. I've used it in all my bikes except that one, and my first bike(before I knew about oils), which include; CB750K4, CB550K0, 2CB125S, and my current CB350F0.

Fixed. I tied the clutch levers back to the handlebars and left it that way for a few days. Then put the bike in 2'nd gear and rocked the rear wheel back and forth which eventually helped the clutch plates break free of each other. Much easier on the equipment. Thanks for the tips.

Mine sat even longer - about 1978 until last May. Worked perfectly and needed no adjustment after the bike came back to life in July.

I think it may be the additives in newer oils, but that's just a guess.

Mine didn't stick until my 2nd or 3rd change this summer (trying to get rid of old oil from PO), now starting to hang up a bit - so oil choice is highly suspect in my case

My clutch still isn't right. I just ignore it at this point. It's brandy new 4 times over and still feels like some of the plates are sticking together.
