It's Thomas Midgley.
He was born in 1889 and died in middle age hung by his own hoist. dispite that his double legacy
will be with us forever!

Very interesting, thanks for the post. I certainly seems to reinforce the theory of unintended consequences, which makes me a little sceptical of things like nanoparticle research.  :-\

Bob,
As a big fan of the sci fi series Red Dwarf I've been worried about that for years - they lost a mile long space ship in a washing basket, cos the nano bots rebuilt it to the wrong scale!
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Bob, thats the best moto I heard for a long time.
Can someone translate it into Latin, I can have a coat of arms made up....

When I first read the post, I thought he committed suicide (rereading I realized it was an accident).

It brought to mind another guy who could fit into this category: Wallace Hume Carothers, the inventor of Nylon and Neoprene. He battled severe bouts of depression and used to keep a cyanide capsule on his watch chain so he would always be prepared in case he felt the need to end it all. One day he checked into a Wilmington, DE hotel and took it. He was once quoted as saying, "Nylon and Neoprene.. I suppose that's enough for a life's work." Chilling....
