cam chain. Is this a heavy duty type of chain?
« on: October 30, 2016, 09:23:07 AM »
The picture show the chain that look like a Heavy duty chain. Side plates are square type, not 8 shaped.
Anyone tested this and compared it with no longer available Tsubaki Camellia or the Yamiya750's "Yoshimura type"

It looks like the higher strength chain with solid ovoid plates. Daido is D.I.D, I'm not sure why/where the different names are used.
Can't guarantee it's really high strength, the steel quality is impossible to judge from a picture.

I'm not an expert, but Jeff at Z1 Enterprises told me 2 or 3 years ago that Tsubaki was getting out of the chain business but that DID made similar style chains. Probably have all along.

No I have not compared the two chains for strength and yes Daido (DID) was the OEM supplier. There are also supposedly higher strength non straight link (figure 8 shape) chains that are likely DID as well.

As I understand it, the main reason for those straight-sided links is that they cause much less wear to tensioner sliders - the chain could still be the same strength and wear lifespan specificatons as a figure 8 type.

Anyone that know?
- How are the DID FTS and FTH chains compared with the old known Tsubaki Camellia?
Most important for me is if the both DID chains are of the same strenght or stronger than Tsubaki

DID 219 FTS is sold by Yamiya as "Yoshimura type".

FTH from the seller located in Italy linked in earlier post. good seller and shipping.
FTH is stronger than FTS according to the data from DID's homepage and linked in earlier post.

EDIT: I'm not sure it will be stronger when it is the weakest link that will limit.
Note! The cam chain in the link above is an OPEN version with link. Maybe for those in need of a new chain and not need to open cases and lift crank.

I have photos of them all 3 beside each other.

Measure dimension of plates. They look identical.

Yes, I'll mesure all 3. Thanks for the link to the DID seller in Italy! :)

Link thickness measured with a caliper. All had same link plate hight, 7.4mm

Yamiya chain (DID 219 FTS)
inner link: 1.1mm
outer link: 1.25mm

Tsubaki
Inner link: 1.35 mm
outer link: 1.1mm

DID 219 FTH (open chain, weakest link will be were you rivet)
Inner link: 1.25mm
Outer link: 1.25mm

So did 219 fth is a little bit stronger then tsubaki...
tsubaki cross section  2x1.1 + 2x1.35 = 4.9
did fth cross section 4x1.25 = 5.0
like 2% but basically the same

I made endless chain from did fth. Just smack it on removable rivets. But I would not worry because this chains are spinning on newer bikes with much higher RPM and HP

I wonder how much weaker the DID FTH is compared with Tsubaki then? Maybe not that much.

My first cam chain was changed at about 60.000kms. That was std chain, 8-shaped. The engine has some rattle then
Harder springs and more lift need tougher chain.

5mm conv kit has not that hard springs.

Did fth is stronger. But for just 2℅. And probably it is not noticable. And all of this fth, fts and so on are industry standards. So tsubaki is also fth chain. For chain to be in fth  standard means that its satisfayin set of industry standards for lets say 219 fth standard. One of the parametars is min allowed tensile strength... also breaking strength.... end so on.
