Those old seats tear themselves apart don't they?
Anyone have a new or tried and true trick to stopping this nonsense?

Dont use them.
Get an used pan and slap on one of those Gumtwo seat covers.  Comfy!

I know right?

I have a solo seat to install, eventually.  In the meantime though...

My red 550 came with the smallest 1" separation on a seam.  Nearly impossible to repair and have it look good.
Re-cover is the way to go...original covers get so stretched and brittle.  If you find a good OEM, store it away.

Get a seat cover for only around $30 and replace the old one, it's not too difficult.

The old material gets so brittle I don't think it can be stopped. Gumtwo's covers look good and are easy to install:

New gator teeth upholstery strips riveted to the seat pan to hold the new seat cover:

New skin stretched into place:

All that work just for this:

I wrapped the foam with saran wrap and folded it under the edge of the pan prior to stretching the cover into place. Helps keep the cover from snagging the foam and helps keep the foam from absorbing any water that might get through the stitching. Looks very good without much effort.

Those old seats tear themselves apart don't they?
Anyone have a new or tried and true trick to stopping this nonsense?

Black duct tape will hold you for a while.  But, GumTwo's seat covers are great. You could try that vinyl repair stuff you can get at any auto-parts store - But I've found that doesn't hold.

You're right about the tape patch.  It certainly slowed the tearing, but as you can see....not permanently.

Here's my 74 550s Gumtwo seat re-cover.
Easy to install. Stretch into place and clips.  Glue (upholsterers cement) under clips one by one working around, keeping the same tension.  Re-secure pan teeth and trip strip.
Easy peasy.

Here's one I did awhile back. Pretty basic really...

If you can reuse the OEM trim and strap as I did here, the results are much better. [I've yet to see a good re-pop strap]

+1 original strap if you can make it work.
