Timing chain question
« on: November 19, 2016, 05:03:43 AM »
Long story short; need to install a new timing chain.  Ordered the chain and a master link,  but the master link posts(for lack of a better word)  are a bit smaller than the chains posts(the shafts that go across connecting the sides of the chain)  k&l says this is the right master link but I'm wondering if this will become a problem?  Should I just crack the case and do complete rebuild?

the chaim is a heavy duty thain vith bigger side valls..and the link are a standart round egdet..it vill look smaller.
..often the heavy thains are endless..so theu dont offer a lose link to that type..but i think the normal link vill Work..but better to find one vho fits perfekt..you dont vant to build a veak link inn..then tha ekstra sekurity from the ekstra strong thain, are lost
is it a 750 ???...
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

I ended up using the new chain from k&l there is a slight difference in the shanks that make the replacement chain a bit bigger so that the master link wouldn't work on the old chain.  Now to fish it through and time it lol.  Wish me luck kind of stabbing in the dark on this one (first bike build)

So you were wanting to use the new master link on the old, existing chain? Sounds like an apples to oranges comparison to me. Use the new master link to temporarily connect the old chain to the new chain and rotate the new chain into place.

I was going to do it that way but the master link wouldn't fit into the old chain lol.  And on the further down side my 7yo wanted to help and just pulled the old chain completely out

Tie new chain and old chain together with steel wire?
Something that hold them together when rotating and replace the old chain with new. I have never done that but it must be possible.
