CB750 people - Does your bike leak?
« on: November 18, 2016, 10:18:19 AM »
Does you bike leak? If so, how much and from where?

Mine currently leaks from the head-gasket and I think from one of the oil line connectors.

Does the pope #$%* in the woods? Does a bear wear a funny hat? It pretty much leaks from most of the possible places where I did not change the oil seals on.

After rebuild I had the oil line leaking and the oil pan drain plug leak.  Put new crush washer on oil drain plug and replaced the oil lines.  I figured the oil lines must have cracked when I stripped down the bike for a full reconditioning.  Old lines were very stiff.  Now, not a drop on floor anywhere!  :)

The hallmarks of the Japanese bikes of the 70's was they didn't leak like the AMF Harleys or the Triumphs.  The running joke in the 70's was the Harleys and Triumphs carried their "oil pans" and placed them underneath when they parked it.

CB750 and leak from head gasket area is standard and have always been. Oil from one place will spread all over the head and more when driving, the wind and heat will make the oil to float, impregnate everything.

Thanks to this forum and all combined knowledge from all members and bike experts that worked with the bikes from the very beginning we know what to do and not. The CB750 can be bone dry.

-Oil leak under rubber coins under the cam holders. Make sure that the rubber coins are fresh and seal them with non hardening sealer.
- cam studs: They must not be removed or coming loose. If they have, new thread inserts like time-sert that are glued with loctite 272, stud sealed with teflon high temp thread sealer.
- Gasket under valve cover OK, no oil leak thru bolts keeping the cover.. EDIT: forgot the breather cover on valve cover. All 3 bolts need to be tightened and good o-ring. oil will leak from here otherwise. I had one leak when driving , front bolt not tightened at all
- Tacho connection to valve cover, typical place from where oil is weeping. Remove cover and replace the oil seal, do not press it in too hard. Do not use a screwdriver from outside when removing the old one. The cover can crack and alu parts falling in beside cam and rocker arms between 3-4. (How do I know????)

Head gasket: MLS, Multi layer steel (mounted dry) does not require another tightening after 500km. The rivets must be hammered flat to not interfere with the mating surfaces. I drilled small dents on my head and cyl block where rivets are located with 8-10mm drill. That gasket need only 2 o-rings for oil feed around the inner 2 studs on inlet side.

MLS need a good surface. I made my blick and head good on the kitchen table. First grit 240 paper, later 400 when all scratches were gone.

I'll fine tune my head again to remove some small scratches happened the last 2 seasons head liftings. Case surface to cyl block too.
Photos when I fixed head and block 2012 when repairing/restoring the engine. later the entire bike..project never stops... :D

Sometimes the oil from a leak will still show up after the leak is fixed. My last one was where the wires leave the dyno cover. It was self inflicted. My brothers bike leaks down from the oil tank and runs out on the sidestand. I suspect the countershaft seal and of course the oil pump seal.

I forgot thr cam chain tensioner housing. Bad gasket and maybe bad threads on any of the 3 bolts will cause a leak.
If engine is taken apart, case opened and wrong sealer used will leak a little. I had bad experience with Hylomar blue. Hermetite Golden was really good, Hondabond almost like that one. Most of the other covers do not need additional sealer. This (Hondabond) will make PITA when removing the cover, replacing the gasket.
Oil seal not correctly mounted on crank on igniotion side... here a little bit sealer, avoid oil hole.
oil seal for kickstarter shaft and gear shifter must be OK. Bike fallen and genefrator cover scratch can get a hole and leak. JB weld can fix that.

Nope. Did a bad valve cover gasket installation once and it leaked right away, cleaned it up and new gasket and it was gone.

My F3 leaks at the head as some of the pucks have failed.  More of a weep actually.  Not quite bad enough to pull the engine immediately, but I will need to do it one of these days.  The unfortunate part is the engine is otherwise tight and runs strong, so the engine needs to come out for $20 worth or of pucks.

When rebuilding my F2 I used an aftermarket gasket set and seals however I pitched the o-rings that came with the gasket set and used viton o-rings wherever I could instead and it still leaked at the head but that turned out to be the cheap pucks. I replaced those pucks with genuine honda pucks and top end of engine has been leak free for about 3 years now however it STILL has a pesky oil leak around the oil pan.

Yep, I have the same leaky puck issue with my K5. It started slow but steadily got worse until now I need to take action.

8 years ago when I got bitten by the sohc bug, my 750 leaked voltage, fork oil, engine oil, compression, and fuel from the fiberglass tank.  Thanks to all your help, now it only leaks fuel when I leave the petcock open.

Maybe missing alu washers in the oil hose connections?
I hade one leak when I did not tighten the upper oil connection to tank properly. I used used a waterpump plier that squeezed the nut tight and not tighten completely, washers did not seal. Used a spanner, 27mm and tighten correctly. No more leaks. Oil hose was of SS braided type so it needed high pressure cleaning from oil in it.

Another time was leak from Clutch cover, gasket was not properly aligned so one dowel pin jammed with gasket and not possible to tighten bolts, cover not completely tightened and squeezing the gasket. Oil flowed rarher good.

Dripping oil under engine can be the drive chain lubrication. Tighten the bolt/nut insode the front sprocket completely or repace it with a bolt with o-ring.

A little weeping around the head gasket, but the engine has never been apart.  Anything else I blame on the BSA parked next to it.   ;D
