High mileage vehicles....is it still a thing?
« on: November 22, 2016, 02:33:38 PM »
I remember growing up, my Dad would tell me any vehicle with 100K miles on it was done....shot...kaput. Even with 60-80K, you were just asking for trouble.

But since I've been keeping an eye out for a new-used van, it's not unusual at all to see vehicles with 200-300K miles on them. Same with trucks. A co-worker has a Chevy with 190K on it and it's still worth mid-high teens where I live.
Any old junker on Craigslist has 150-250K on it, car or truck.

Do high miles really matter any more? I guess a paper trail of service is always good, but it seems like nearly anything made in the last 15 years ought to be good for 200,000 miles or more.

Not so much as it used to be like on say 70's and earlier cars. How well it's maintained is still a key factor but it's not uncommon now days to see even a moderately maintained car exceed the 100k mark and still run well.

My Explorer had well over 325k on it and was still going strong without any issues, but sadly it was the body that gave up.
I think that with longer daily commutes low mileage cars are a thing of the past. I was doing 80m a day (40m each way), so that's easily 24k/year (roughly) if I used it only for going to work.

People still think that way. Being in the industry, I have several customers with high mileage vehicles. My own avalanche has 180k on it. My uncles crv has 240k. (Btw for our European and Canadian brethren by k we mean 1000 miles. I have a customer with a Tacoma that has 285k, a ridge line with 320k and then a suburban with 300+k. Most Honda timing belts are due at 60-80k and I've done some of my customers 3-4 times over the years. The only think holding vehicles back today are transmission issues imo. Engines and drive line seem to be lasting well as long as you take care of them, transmission however like always, even with regular oil changes, you just never know.

The manufacturers have made tremendous strides in materials and machining that have greatly improved the longevity of the vehicles.

I'm almost positive the same is true for motorcycles, boat motors, you name it.  I have 200,000 on my Ranger and it doesn't show any sign of having less power, burning oil, etc...

We've learned a heck of a lot about metallurgy since the 50's.

I  had 5 older Honda Civics (pre 2000) that would go 300,000+ miles before the fenders etc etc would rust out.

The last 3 Civics I have had (2002,2002 2007) all started having major problems at 150,000 miles with various expensive parts, continuously. Spent a ton of $ keeping them on the road. Not buying another. Next car will be a Toyota Corolla as my current one has 265,000 miles with only having a fuel pump replaced.

My 1999 F150 is at about 184k miles. Still going strong. I have to agree that switching to galvanized steel body panels has really controlled the rust. Cold rolled plain steel back in the 70's simply could not hold up.

I agree with the metallurgy being better and also the machining and tolerances being better. The newer vehicles also run much cleaner which is one reason we see oil change intervals getting longer. My Triumph Trophy calls for 10,000 mile oil changes and the oil doesn't look bad when I change it.

Last visit to a pull and pay junkyard I checked an Acura Legend for a part. It was pretty well totally used up at 536,000 miles. I let mine go at 244,000 miles. Didn't want to do a head gasket job on it at that point.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Unfortunately the 2000s were bad years for the civic. I always tell people stay away from them and they think I'm crazy. "You'd take your 96 over a 2006?" #$%* yes. All day, every day.

My 1995 Honda Civic Si has 310,000 on it and still doing very well. Doesn't drop oil, good compression and passes smog every two years on the original engine. I've always done the work on it myself since I got it brand new. GREAT car!

I have a 1993 Isuzu 4 door 4WD pickup with 400,000 K's on it, only rebuilt the injector pump due to changes in the diesel formula {shrinking seals}, still going strong, highly reliable car...

My 97 4Runner had close to 400000 and would still be going strong if my stupid son hadn't rolled it.  My 97 Cherokee has 252000 and runs well,  my old 97 Golf had 180000 before reverse gear left the premises.   I buy high mileage cars for 1200 or so and run them until they quit. Usually last at least a couple years...Larry

Dodge rams with magnum motors often develop rod knocks around 125,000mi.  Seems to be  a design flaw - occassionally you come across an exception to that rule.

Yeah well the obnoxiously loud exhaust will cover that problem up nicely.

(I don't like Dodge Ram pickups because that Cummin's is so loud).

I wanted the 5.7L hemi, but settled for a "good" 5.9 magnum (gas) with leather and woodgrain interior.

The newer cummins engines make a lot less noise under the hood.

Old man has 462,000 on his 96 Tacoma. Bought it new in 96. Never done anything but routine maintenance. Mom has almost 300K on her 07 Altima. Had the coil packs replaced, that's about it. Have 62,000 on a 2013 Tacoma, hope it lasts as long.

The 4.7 and 3.7s are junk as well. I'm sure some people have luck with them, but  or many that I've seen.

It will. The one old man with the Tacoma I service has 300+ on his 4.0. I think it's an 09? Same engine anyway. Doesn't even use synthetic in it.

for 20+ years ago..rust eated the car..so it have to be scrapped..the engines often have longer life then the rest...nowdays the elektronic is killiing a car..both kaross and engines lives longer..but the cost to repair the elektronics is heiger then a used car..
good old daus..30 years ago,, a ford engine vas smoking after 100,000 km..normaly 2 engines in a car life vas standart...in Europa..specily the British ford had bad engines...but a used engine vas a easy job..and low cost..it vas easyer back then..
