1979 cb650
« on: November 23, 2016, 07:46:54 AM »
I know this is a one year frame. Does the swing arm fit an 82 frame? And would it also fit a 550 frame since that's what it was based off for that year it was introduced?

Engine from my research will fit both.

Well, I just learned something, I didn't realize that the '79 CB650 had a 1 yr. design frame. Be interested to know more, about this.  ;)

Found this and it says that the '79 CB650 frame was the same as the 70's CB550 that it was designed after. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle.

I don't understand what happened, I copied the link off of Wikipedia for the 1979 CB650 and that isn't what it showed, when I brought it up on this thread. SMH  ::)

This article is about Honda's 1979-1985 four-cylinder bike. For the current model, which is related to CBR650F, see Honda CB650F.
The Honda CB650 is a four-cylinder middleweight motorcycle manufactured from 1979 to 1985 by Honda. The machine was largely based on the Honda CB550 and the 1979 model had the same frame and speedometer as the Honda CB550 of the 1970s. The tachometer had different gearing and is not interchangeable without also replacing the cam and tachometer drive gear. The 1979-1982 CB650's engine had the same engine block as the CB550, but was bored out to 626 cc. The SOHC four-cylinder, eight-valve engine had added domed pistons and produced 63 hp (47 kW) @ 9,000 rpm.[1] The CB650's performance was comparable to contemporary DOHC 750 cc motorcycles because of it being built on the lighter, more compact chassis of the CB550. It was Honda's last SOHC air-cooled straight-four engine, which was a culmination of the engine technology of Honda up to that time.

Found this online, tried to simply put up a link, but that didn't work, so I "Copied" it.

The 650 is without a kickstarter, has a deeper sump design, and a hemispherical head design with better air flow through the head and I think higher compression. I also seem to recall the stroke is different on the 650, being longer.  Taper on rotor side is different and the bike has a cdi ignition instead of point and that system can be troublesome. I think there are some inaccuracies in that source...some over simplification as well.

If you want to learn the differences of the motor over the 550 look up paulages thread on the hybrid 650-550 builds and prepare for a long read, excellent resource though.

I am pretty sure the frame has some changes as well.

Of the 650s the 79 is the only one I would want to own...short of a 650 motor in a 550 chassis.

Terry, guess I should have realized that you would be a great source of info, on this subject. And I had no idea that the 650 forum was still around. Have to check in over there. Now, if only I remember the password?  ::)

The 1979 CB650 frame was the closest geometry-wise to the CB500/550 frames.  From 1980-82, the 650 went to a cruiser geometry with the seat frame rails significantly lower in height.
