Hindle 4-2-1 Stainless exhaust - first impressions!
« on: November 23, 2016, 11:21:08 AM »
I just received my Hindle 4-2-1 Stainless exhaust system from Ripple Rock Racers up in Canada. Thought I'd share some photos and first impressions.

I decided to finally splurge on a new exhaust after I realized my junky 4-2 system that came on the bike when I bought it was actually sticking out so far forward that the front fender would get stuck between #2/#3 when braking with a passenger. Not safe! The Canadian dollar is doing really poorly now so all the usual options were crazy expensive after conversion, shipping and duty. Then I found the Hindle system. Canadian funds (even better for you Americans, this is a GREAT deal for you), and shipping was $20 to my door!

Ripple Rock was excellent to deal with. They were very responsive, gave me some jetting suggestions to start with, and had the system shipped within a few days. Ripple Rock works with Hindle to design the systems for our bikes. They were actually at Hindle when I bought mine.

The system was very well packaged, lots of foam padding, cardboard, paper etc.

After opening, I was pleased with what I found. Good looking welds, the pieces slide together nice and tight but without needing to force it. Quality looks A+ to me.

I didn't realize how open the 'baffle' was on the 12" pipe, so this is going to be a fair bit louder than I expected, but that's fine by me. They do offer a longer and quieter muffler for the same price.

Now the bad news......it just snowed 3 inches and the roads are covered in ice. Looks like I'll have to wait till spring to actually ride the damn thing. It's a cruel world sometimes.   :'(

Love the look of it, but from Hindle's web site it doesn't look like "Honda - CB750 - 1978" is available

...AH! There they are!

I would email them to ask, it sounds like they might be made to order. When I bought mine, I got an email back from Ripple Rock saying they had placed the order with Hindle. So I don't know if they usually order a batch from Hindle to stock and sell, or if Hindle is making them on request. Anyway, worth an inquiry for sure.

They're shown on the Ripple Rock page

I'd be curious to see in the Y pipe to see the welds, and at the collector. If its still apart and not installed, would you mind?

Not installed yet. I actually can't install till Christmas as the bike is in winter storage at my parents place as of the weekend, and I won't be out there till the holidays.

Here are some more photos. Is that what you're looking for?

I just got my custom triple tree from Ripplerockracers this week.

I order my stuff directly from Kemp who is a co owner of the company.

It helps that I live 20 mins from him & their shop.

I know others who have the same system and love it.

I just wish they had something shorter in length.

With our poor Canadian dollar, anyone looking for a system should consider buying from Ripplerockracers

Even shorter than the 12" muffler? I thought it was really short myself, but I suppose that's up to personal taste.

I was purely curious as to whether they had purged during welding. Pictures say not. And its not entirely required anyway, just "better".

When you weld thin wall stainless, you must be rather careful with the amount of heat so as not to blow out a hole. Sometimes, this leads to pinholes in the welds (from too little heat and not enough weld burn-in). Purging while welding helps reduce any distortion and insures the weld doesn't get sucked internally (see the weld ridges inside the pipe?) and create small areas of porosity. It certainly can be welded successfully without purging, as RRR have an excellent reputation. I was merely curious as to whether or not they had.

Not issuing any judgements, just something that I wanted to know.  :)

So do you think that crusty part inside should be knocked down a bit..
All the way may weaken it too much.

I can see the benefit from a pure performance point of view, lessening restriction of exhaust flow, but I don't think I'd notice or appreciate such marginal gains enough to warrant potentially weakening the pipe. Correct me if I'm wrong but I can't image that would make much difference? If I wanted to go faster I don't think I'd grind the welds down...I'd do an 836 conversion  8)

Was that "precision ground" or "asphalt ground"?

Heyyyyyy now, I'm wearing plaid right now and have a beard, and the fact that I'm under 35 means 99% of you would probably call me a hipster, but I've 'asphalt ground' my #$%*ty old exhaust more than a few times   ;D

that said.. I know what you're getting at, and you're not wrong haha  ::)

I've been wearing plaid since at least early 80s - everybody younger is by default a hipster.
Now get off my lawn and go play on somebody else's street, dammit.
