Well, I don't think it's good news. Still smoke from #1 on startup. Also after idling for a bit when warm and giving it gas, there is a puff of smoke still. It is running great otherwise. I fear the guides may be worn, causing movement of the valve stems and warping the seal. Only one way to find out I guess.

Are you getting a funky smells?  My 750F has grown been a bit smoky upon start up but it does not smell like burning oil.  Way less mid summer, more smoke spring and fall (not really temperature dependant either)

This engine has fresh honed bores, new piston rings and correct end gaps not too small?

Yes, this engine was a fresh build about 2 years ago. New pistons, rings, bore/hone. I personally set ring gaps so I know they are right. I'm pretty sure it is head and not cylinder related.

Interestingly my 550 started to burn oil this summer too. Went into winter storage last fall in seemingly excellent condition. Woke this spring with an annoying oil burn. Spark plug in cylinder #4 is really black. Thought it might be valve seals but haven't spent much time investigating. Going to do a leak down test soon and may have to try this spiffy valve removal technique. Thanks for posting it.
