CB900F in the garage.
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:50:05 AM »
It's been a busy year, moving out of a house we've been in for 22+ years, (2) pole barns full of stuff (and motorcycles) and moving into a smaller house (no pole barns). Things have started to wind down and I saw this one on Ebay:

1981 CB900F. In need of paint, tune-up, carbs cleaned, rear caliper rebuild.... but, it's all there and original. Should be a nice winter project.

Eight bikes and two cars in a (3) car garage, no wonder my wife thinks I'm crazy.

The tank and rear cowl paint and decals are very faded. No dents or cracks or broken tabs, so that's a plus.

I like the paint scheme of the '82, yours looks good. A friend of mine has an '82 750F, that's what got this started in the first place. Only I thought I needed the extra HP of the 900... LOL!

Only around for two years which is kind of cool. The decals were pretty fragile and weak on these. How many miles is on yours ?

A little over 11,000. It looks like it sat outside for most of it's life.

New decals coming.

I have an '80 CB750K, that I really like. Isn't the 900 basically a larger model of mine? St any rate, the 900 has always been spoken highly of and I thought I was going to get a shot at getting one, a few years back, but didn't happen. Good Luck with yours, hope it works well for you.  8) ;)   Bill

When the cams come on they just get-it, so be prepared for some serious motivation and fast shifting, cause they "R" pretty fast.  I used to race it all the time and had to lean way over the front to keep the front wheel down on launches from stop lights.   :P

Nice find on a not too often seen model these days.

Yes once they hit the main jets in the carbs at about 6K hang on as they do really go hard until red line. I have done quite a few CB 900 and 1000 Series DOHC models, so a tip on the carbs is to really check the slow speed jet in each carb, as they do have a tendency to plug and are a little deceptive internally to be sure they are totally clean.

The second achilles heel of these bikes are the shim on bucket valve adjustment that is usually never done by a PO. With only 11K miles you should be fine, but definitely check that plus the cam chain adjustments.

If you don't have a FSM on the bike send me a PM with an email address and I can send you a Google Drive PDF of the Honda Factory Service manual.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

When you buy parts, be careful where they come from. Europe had this bike 2 years earlier than the U.S. and it went through a couple of changes.
For example, it started with 35mm forks, went to 37mm and finally 39mm. U.S. only had the last version.

Tins are out to the painter, bike is looking a little "naked" right now:

Parts are back from the powder coater, too. I'll snap some pics of those this weekend.

Gonna be one sharp looking ride, when you get the painted bits back on. my '80 CB750K isn't quite the machine the 900 is, but runs pretty well. I just gotta get to where I can work on it. And yours, is an inspiration to me, to get things done, so I can do so.  ;)

This one is taking some time, but I'm making progress. Carbs rebuilt, brakes rebuilt, fluids changed, new air filter, plugs, etc. Front turn signals re-mounted, getting it cleaned up, that's taking some time, the bike was pretty dirty. Need to replace the fork seals, yet.

Tins have been painted and cleared. The painter scuffed the clear so the decals would adhere better. Decals are on and the parts will be taken back to the painter for the final coat of clear, tomorrow.

It's getting there.
