goin bagger
« on: December 03, 2016, 05:18:11 PM »
I know fairings are looked down on here, and haters gunna hate.........but I ride year round and use my bike as primary transportation and frankly with my bad shoulder the windblast I get on the highway is killin me.  That and it's gettin pretty chilly in the mornings going to the shop.  So I have decided to go bagger for now, I will go back to naked when I get a road couch and she will be my round town bike.  I got a great deal on a Windjammer SS from a member here that included lowers, and it arrived earlier this week.  So I mocked it up while doing the chain and sprocket work and got to ride with it today.......WOW it's a COMPLETELY different bike with a fairing!!  The aerodynamics of the fairing make the bike VERY stable at highway speeds and the front suspension seems to be a little smoother with the extra weight on it.  I didnt put the lowers on cause they interfere with the forward controls, but I may be getting a complete set of triple A floorboards, so I may use them after all.  I want to modify how the bracket goes on the frame, I want to use bicycle tube between the frame and mounting bracket and add more clamps to spread the load a little more.  No pictures today...it got dark.

I know exactly what you mean. My 750 is first choice when riding. However, there are those days when I choose the take the Harley for that very reason. From here to Vegas without wind protection just beats me up. But sitting behind that batwing faring makes a world of difference on longer rides or colder trips. Enjoy it.

There are more than a few here who have posted pics of their "fared" bikes. I like the earlier Wixom style, but a decent one with hardware may run upwards of $250+ then add refinishing. $$$

I hear you, right now all my 750's are naked but I love my gl1000 with a windjammer and lowers. I have a set of vetter bags and intend to do some repairs on them and re-install later. Back in the day I had 750 with a windjammer and commuted to work on it every day down to near freezing temps. I'm not a fan of riding on ice though, if it was below 40, I took a car.

Oddly enough the gas mileage should increase as well despite pushing a big fairing through the air it has more efficiency.  Vetters developed some really impressive mpg numbers when Craig put his mind to it and developed them for enhanced fuel economy.

Having a fairing can prevent a bird strike for your body and can take the brunt of a deer strike rather than giving all the energy over the handlebars onto your chest and head.  Not that it is going to be good if that were to happen.  For the winter driving there is nothing wrong with having onevon the bike.  They are really nice on highway when dealing with rain when you have the lowers...you stay substantially drier and warmer.

Check out Windstopper fleece for below your jacket.  It is a goretex blend that eliminates wind penetration.  Helps retain body heat really well too boot.

The only way to travel!

I cut about 3" off the top of the windshield, so as not to have to look through it, and the wind bubble still was above my helmet.

Tell me about it...the windshield is WAY to tall.  I was going to cut down mine too.  I want to order a new one with the vents and cut this one down to around the top of the fairing and use it for summer.  Still working on hard bags.

FWIW, I'm 5'11" and I cut mine off to about 19" height, and that put the wind boundary layer just above my helmet. At that height, I am naturally looking over the top of the shield. Below that was almost completely still with the vents open. I eventually just removed the vent pop outs totally, even for the winter as they made the inside air much quieter. Made almost no difference in the rain.

I determined how much to lower the original shield by riding at around 60 mph, and moving my left hand up and down above my forehead to see where the boundary layer was. It was about 3" above the top of the helmet, so I then cut the same amount off.

You can easily cut the shield with sabre saw, using tape to protect from scratching the surface.

You can also hang the shield upside down and treat the cut edge with a chemical (I can't remember the name right now) to smooth it out like factory finish.

You can use a common door knob hole saw ( 3 1/4" I believe) for the vents which fit perfectly with the original pop outs.

So the vents with the pop-outs dont move much air?  Hows the air flow with just the holes?

The air flow was perfect for me with just the holes and the pop outs completely removed.

With the pop outs installed and closed, the turbulence increased, but made little difference in keeping cold or rain out.

I get it...havent got to many miles with the fairing on yet, but I'm sure I'll need to vent behind it.

Redid the wiring on the fairing today so the blinkers work like stock and remounted the frame bracket with bicycle inner tube rubber between the frame and mounting cups.  I also bought new clamps and added 2 more to the lower mounts.  You hear different sounds with a fairing on, like more valve-train noise, and it has a resonance at certain rpm's that needs to be dampened out, but that should be easy to get rid of.  I still need to come up with some saddlebags to finish the look, but I'm pretty happy with how the fairing turned out and how she rides with it.

If these look usable I'd make a smoking deal,

They're on a 74 the frame mounts might be a little short.

The CX500 has a thick foam pad beneath the tank that helps dampen noise quite a bit.  It is a closed cell foam that is not very heavy. It also helps direct air from the cooling fan/radiator and keeps the fuel cooler than it would be otherwise.
Maybe something like that could help with your bike's noise.  Anytime you put a fairing on it you will hear more motor noise. The lowers will even do that as well, hearing different sounds than normally.

Same here. Bags and fairing = fully dressed to impress. Bagger just means bags.

Same for me but I truly understand the need for a fairing. I once said that I'd never have a windshield but now regularly ride with a fairing or windshield

Most of what are marketed as baggers today have cop style windshields or fairings with very short screens. I rarely see a bike with bags but no windscreen (except for when Sean Barney goes touring on his 750 cafe).
