Started the '77 Build :)
« on: December 04, 2016, 11:01:21 PM »
Got the rear end ordered.. determining front end options now.. going to attempt to locate a matching front end but the tube length has me scratching my head.. Didn't really want to go down the Daryl's bike road but wont know for sure till I get the parts in my hands and see what I can do with them..   Shooting for the classic café look.. Here goes nothing!  :)

Sorry, but I feel like I came into the middle of a conversation.  I see that you have a CB750K7 and note that you want to modernize the rear and the front, but you also say you want a classic café look.  I gather from this that what you're really going for is a restomod café and not a period-correct (classic) café.  Is this going to be a showbike, street bike, vintage-ish racer?

Lots of members here have done modern fork swaps.  Some have also upgraded to a CalFab aluminum swingarm (from MotoGP Werks), Dresda (period correct) boxed swingarms, TTR400 swingarms, or CMR chromoly boxed swingarms.

What's the story the swingarm and rear wheel/brake set-up pictured in your post?

Guess its a terminology thing, I want a clean, fast lowered street bike with modern day suspension/disc brakes..
show bike? sure.. daily driver? sure.. Classic café.. perhaps not classic other than being a 77 kick start..

Suspect by the time I'm done the only thing that will still be fairly original is the engine.  Have the 500X rear swingarm already in the garage.. trying to find a matching front end but after considering it will probably go with inverted front end.

Lol.

Btw I'm not implying that what is happening here isn't possible, or completely unnecessary, but a 77 cb750 is nothing close to a modern 750 in terms of power. Not sure if he knows that.

I have an 02 zr7 that is basically what he's doing but with more power.

Just curious, why did you select a Honda CB500X (http://powersports.honda.com/2016/cb500x.aspx#Mrdu1eMEdegvMYEc.97) for the swingarm?  Is it a direct bolt on??

I'm not sure what your skill level is, and don't want to insult you, but in addition to the swingarm fitting the pivot space of the frame, you will need to consider how a different swingarm affects handling and power delivery.  Even if a swingarm bolts in with some or no modification (fitment-wise), it's length, geometry, travel and suspension can create issues for handling and traction.  For the unwary, you could end up with an ill-handling bike or one that eats up tires or has lackluster traction.  That's why many people who do swap swingarms use one with similar specs.  I am not making any conclusions as to whether you've thought about this or figured it all out.  For instance, Tony Foale has a modeling program that helps builders consider these issues.

Assuming that you've figured out the engineering please tell us more.

Aren't CX500s shaft drive? That will badly complicate the swing arm swap, if thats the reference above?

He's referring to a CB500X modern bike not the Plastic Maggot aka CX500.

Haha!

Idk cal it could probably be done with a jack shaft driving a 90degree gearbox. Lol actually something I'd like to see not for any other reason than curiosity.

Actually never mind, that would give you 5 reverse gears I think.

Woah, stepped out for a bit..  Sorry about that!

Quote
Just curious, why did you select a Honda CB500X

To be honest I liked that it looked so much like the 90's arm, has a disc brake and I kinda dug the wheel look.. It's still H beam with a mono vice being like a single sided VFR swingarm I'm helping a buddy with on another 77 frame...    Definitely been doing the math involved in the final numbers, so It should fit with a little convincing...

Wish this thing was a direct bolt on but it's pretty close.. think rough measurements I got off another frame leave about 1/2" I've got to make up with spacers and such..

Quote
but a 77 cb750 is nothing close to a modern 750 in terms of power

True, true.. but she will be faster.. My plan at first is to get the front and rear suspension right and run the engine stock until I can either find another engine to build or can do with her tore down.. (already have some oversize pistons and a spare head to machine).  Was loosely looking at adapting fuel injection.. don't really need it but it sure would be cool!

Picked up a 2006 CBR600RR inverted front end that should be here any day for a decent price.
