Fork Piston Seal replacement?
« on: December 11, 2016, 02:45:21 PM »
Sorry if this has already been covered, but I'm in the process of rebuilding the forks on my 77' CB400F and wanted to see if it would be best to replace the fork piston/damping rod seals (PN 51437-413-003) while I'm in there or if I can reuse the old ones. I can't seem to find anything on this after searching. Not sure if I'm not using the correct key words but nothing is popping up. Thanks in advanced for any help/advice!

Yes, and with luck you should be able to order them through your local honda dealer

I agree with changing the seals. Unfortunately the last ones I bought from Honda offered a poorer seal than the ones I was replacing. There was less seal pressure against the inside of the fork tube, but these were 35mm forks. Honda has older replacement parts standardized between models & made using different manufacturers from original so sometimes fit is questionable, same goes for certain o-rings.

Regardless after 40 years I would still replace yours while they're still available from Honda.

I noticed my replacement sat loose on the piston too.  But it squished on and into the tube well enough.

Yes they are loose on the damper rod but should be snug against the inside of the tube. A correct fit shouldn't allow the damper rod to drop through the tube under it's own weight.
