You right, looks cool, but there were accidents.  You can't really get boys 19 - 21 to drive heavy vehicles (T-55 was about 36 metric tons) without somebody getting hurt every so often.

The tool kit hammer was 30 pounds btw  ;D

The train they show, that is going down the track, looks to be carrying M88 (or maybe M88A1) Recovery Vehicles. I worked at an Army Reserve Equipment Concentration Site, for 23yrs and we had an M88 (early model, with a 12 cylinder gas motor) and saw us get in an M88A1 (12 Cylinder Diesel) to replace it. Only had 2 there, the whole time I was there. We had everything stored there, from the smallest things, to the M88s and such. Only other track vehicles there, were a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, Personnel Carriers and Bulldozers.

Bill, I am no expert, but I believe those are OT-62s.  Like this one:

the movie is from East block, likely Poland.

Same for Czechoslovakia, we were to be sacrificed before the fresh forces would come from behind Ural.

Plans of mice and men, haha.

I seen later same T-55 tanks we served with on CNN, they looked like this:

Could be, I am not familiar with a lot of the track or wheel vehicles they have now. Have to remind myself that I retired back in Dec of 1996. LOL  And they have an A2 version of the M88 Tank Retriever now. I should have guessed that.

I was going by the basic shape and having the "dozer type blade" on the front and not having a turrent. Still something though, the way they got the tanks off of the railcars though.  :)

My oldest son was an army truck driver during the Persian Gulf war and at the end of the war he was sent into Iraq to help with the cleanup of the "Highway of Death" and also bring some heavy equipment back to Kuwait. After the Abrams were loaded by operators and hauled back to the base, it occurred to those in charge that there were no tank operators there to unload them. The truck drivers were told to unhook the chains and drive around the desert until they bounced off.....what could it hurt?

Whoa! you woulda thought they would have had at least 1 qualified driver, even if it was a track mechanic. And, I guess they didn't set the Parking brake on them, cause they do have them. But, to leave something as valuable and costly, as those M1 (or M1A1) Abrams sitting all over the place? Talk about being Non Security conscious!!  ::)  Not to mention possible damage that could be caused. Wow!
