clutch adjustment tool
« on: December 10, 2016, 04:03:34 PM »
Has anyone seen a tool that fits what looks like a very large screwdriver slot on the crankcase cover?  If so, do you know where I can get one?

Possible, Snap On or Mac tool truck would have or order.  I have seen those slots on British and Japanese bikes, so they are out there.
McCarr MacMasters(not sure of spelling) carry all sorts of interesting things.

PS don't know if you might make one with some flat steel that fits the slot

+1. Those slots are usually radiused, so worth getting it as close as possible to get a decent purchase on it. Depending on size, I've fabricated 'special tools' for this type of application with nothing more than a suitably sized coin and a pair of Mole grips  :)

The factories made that slot so everyone would always have a tool to fit.............coins or circular spark-gap tools should already be in your pocket ;)

Thank you everyone for your replies.  Right now I am looking for a large diameter washer which is also the correct width.   I am thinking that the difficulty I am having in turning this is due to an underlying problem with the mechanism.  Now I have to figure out how to take it apart and clean it and lube it.

Just out of curiosity (and you never know, someone here might have come across this before) - what bike are you working on?

Just buy a large flat bladed screwdriver and grind the end so that the blade becomes thicker as you grind it down further. I bought one from a local Harbour Freight type store up here and it fits perfectly into the slot and works well. You can grab the metal shaft with a pair of vice grips to get some extra torque on the turning action if necessary.
If the part is seized into the case from non removal for a long time, it will be more difficult to remove it initially. Be careful hitting it too hard as that material is aluminum and can fracture and break if you are too aggressive.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

I just use a large washer. I don't remember the exact size offhand but the curve of the washer and it's thickness were just about perfect.
