  • Tryin' To Slow Down "Time"!

Now days, there are more possibilities: (The first few, have been around for some time, but the rest?

          1. You might just sell it
          2. Then there are those who want you to drop your price to an unreal low
          3. Then, we got more options of where to list the item(s)
          4. Then, a few years ago, Scamming entered the picture
          5. Also, there were problems, when listing with "Craig's List", cause either the seller
or the possible buyer could end up robbed and badly injured or dead!
          6. Also, along with #5, there was a Pregnant woman, who went to check something
out and ended up, getting her unborn baby taken from her!

Is there no end to this? I mean, I myself, have listed with Craig's list and sold a few
things. Then, next thing I know, I get texts from people wanting to tell me how we
were going to proceed in the way of when they were coming, how we were going to
make the deal and such. Then, I have gotten messages from very distant parts of the
U.S., inquiring of what I had to sell and I only listed the things in the local area. So, I
quit listing on Craig's List and then, when this LetGo things came along, I thought I
would give it a shot and listed some things. One of those things was a Challenger
Style Hood that is made for the 2006-10 Dodge Charger. This place seemed okay.
Now, I get a text saying "Reply my wife @ such and such email address. Then, a few
days later, I got a text saying "Hello are youn Kindly Email my Husband", another
one," Reply my wife" and another, "Kindly Email my Husband". These all came
from different phone numbers, with various area codes  Now, maybe it is just
me, but this is Really Fishy sounding! Sure discourages a person, from posting up
something to sell, except on places like here, for sure.   Just sayin'  ::)

I think I understand Bill  ::) all of that stuff keeps nice folks from dealing with other nice folks.. or being afraid to list a ph.# or email.. I like the way it used to be before everyone got so weird w/ computers.  ::)  I've looked for stuff on searchtempest.com before and found some bikes in another state and didn't mind travelling if I couldn't find what i was looking for locally, but many folks I was buying from wouldn't give me a deal if I do it that way. That search tempest doesn't seem to work too well lately.

I've heard of folks having trouble with strangers showing up at the door with other intentions , and I 've heard of buyers showing up to make a deal and getting robbed. Over the years I have met some very nice folks either buying or selling.
But I don't go someplace alone....and the friend is waiting out in the truck should the Sh*t hit the fan, then they can drive off and call the cops , follow if they take off, that kind of thing....I always play the worst case scenario before visiting anyone's house,( I visit some strange folk with my construction company for the past 30 years) you just have to be keen for things that aren't right. I figure, if it all goes south only one of us will be walking out of the house,so far so good. As for buyers coming to the house with bad intentions....my turf, definitely ready for some sh*t , just got to find a good place to bury them.
So far , no issues and all good people. Doesn't mean you let down your guard, that's when things can go terribly wrong. It was no better when we took out or answered an ad in the Sunday paper.

Yeah, you are right. And, myself, there have been times that I have listed things, because I was needing to come up with some cash and then I would get people who wanted what I had (or, at least said they did) and start questioning what I had or telling me I was asking too much and want it for nearly nothing. And, when you are trying to scare up some cash, the last thing you need are those who want it given to them or just wasting your time, with B.S. And I hadn't even heard of the one you listed, sounds like it is just as well. Shame a person can't just list something and get decent responses. Last thing I listed on LetGo, was the Hood and I had a "Supposed" buyer and after some interaction with him, he messages me back and say's Thanks, but I found another one. Really, I would not have thought there would be that many of these used hoods out there for sale, like this one. SMH Oh well, whatever.

My local Police have a spot in their parking lot just from online purchases. It came about after a bad incident in the next Town over. It is popular and people know if the buyer does not want to meet you there, they are shady.

I like that Bobby, meeting in a neutral/protected place;I bring my stuff there if I'm the seller or I ask if a seller I don't know will meet me in such a place in their area.Sounds good.

I never let a potential buyer come to my house. Maybe a little paranoid, but I'd rather not let anyone know what bikes I have in my garage.

What about paying?

One of the things that has generally kept me away from larger purchases is the idea of me walking around with thousands of dollars in my pocket.  With scammers all over the place I sure won't hand someone a check (not that I've written one in over 5 years...).  Same thing with credit cards - hardly anyone has a reader for their cell and again it could just as easily be a hacker.

so I stick with cash.

That's pretty cool, though it is too bad about "Bad Incidents" that make that necessary.

I've always had good dealings on CL. You do have to be very careful and selective. I always need to speak on the phone first to talk details, always meet in a public place and the payment has to be exact, no change. I always carry a blade and if I feel like I need it a trusted, armed friend is inconspicuously close by. Safety first friends!  ;D

When you list an item, don't include your phone number.
Tell them to email you their phone number,(through craigslist, don't list your email either).
If they are serious, they will do it. This eliminates all the scammers and tire kickers.

Yes! Never direct first contact. Email with a phone number from them first via the CL email system and it weeds out the lame folks.

Yeah, I created another email address to deal with potential scammers  and flakes for craigslist transactions and then if they sounded legit I would have them give me their number for me to call. With most of my stereo equipment there was no way I could do the transaction somewhere else besides my house except for the guy that came to my storage unit to pick up the huge Altec 210 cabinet. I wish I didn't have to give that away but there was no way the wife was going to allow that monstrosity in the house.  :P

I actually have  had some buyers come to my house, some time back. But then, I wised up. Thank God, I never had an incident. The last time, I was so nervous that I started meeting them at a parking lot, with a lot of people around. But even at that, I Went to Bentonville, Arkansas once, to meet a guy coming from Kansas, to sell him a set of Holley carbs and Aluminum Edelbrock "6Pack" Intake and the deal went off as planned, but I was glad to get back in my car and get back on the hyway and head home.

I can sure agree whole heartily  with this. When I sold the "6Pack" Carbs & Manifold, I came home with $1400 & just tried to be nice to the guy (which wasn't hard, as he was about my age and a very nice sort) and yet finish the transaction, once he paid me and I handed over the items, we said our good byes, I wished him luck with his 69 1/2 road runner Clone build and we parted company. And yes, I also always specify "Cash Only"

Very cool info here, I never thought of doing this. But then, I never thought I would be selling quite a lot of things either or that I would be doing it many times.

I am appreciating the input here, by everyone, perhaps it will help others as well as myself.  ;)

+1  The only way to fly. I recently sold my cbr on C/L to a total stranger. He had some
financial and insurance issues due to his previous bike got stolen. It took a week
to get it sorted, but I got paid and he got the cbr. All correspondence thru cell texts,
calls, and finally at his bank. CYA and ask the right questions. You can usually weed
out the screwballs. And unless the sale involves paperwork, nobody knows where you live. Knock on wood, I've never had a bad experience on C/L. Hope I never do.
I know they're out there tho.

I sold a bike on ebay and recd. the deposit $ at the time of sale and the man finished paying me the balance w/ paypal which we confirmed right over the smart phone. There's a lot more serious buyers on ebay rather than CL and it would have taken a Lot longer to sell locally(the Pittsburgh area CL s#cks  >:() on CL.I sold the bike for less than $1900 so the fee was only $60.

I have done sells over C/L and local Yard sale pages on F/B and, for the most part, things went well. Now I have not had any BAD experiences, just pain old aggravating people who seem to be trying to scam me. When I inherited my Dad's things, he and I had quit a bit of duplicate tools & equipment. So, I thought about it and decided to sell the duplicates (for the most part). I picked whichever individual item I wanted to keep and put the other up for sale. But I have listed a few things that seems to draw out the Scammers. Anyway, I get people who seem to show an interest and then they either get my hopes built up and disappear or try to tell ME how it is going to go down, then there is the one who seemed to be SO interested in my Challenger style hood that fits '06-'10 Chargers, we correspond a bit and suddenly he says, Sorry, I found another one. Really? I know I don't have the only one, but He doesn't even try to work out a deal, just is suddenly gone. It IS possible he found another, but nowdays, I am doubtful. I have bought a lot of things off of ebay, with only 1 issue and that wasn't that bad. I had bought a CB77 Super Hawk Head complete and when I got it, I found that the head had been damaged. So, I contacted the seller and I told him about it and he was ready to handle it, but I also told him that I had bought it, for a spare and the price wasn't that bad. So, I told him I would just completely disassemble it, keep the parts for spares  and toss the head itself. I was mainly letting him know that he might want to double check his packing practices. As it could come back to bite him. I have heard some horror stories on the forum, about bad ebay experiences, but I have yet to have one. Maybe I need to try my hand at selling on there. I just will need the buyer (if I find one) for things like this hood, to either come and get it (not actually at my Home) or arrange to meet him partway or something. Good comments folks, I appreciate it and might help others as well.  ;)
