It all started about 4 years ago when looking for something that could get me out of the house and keep me occupied. I didn't want an bike that someone else had restored as the restoration process is what I really wanted to do as much actually owning and riding a bike. I found for sale a project that a guy was selling as he needed funds for his business.
What I got was a bike that was 75-80% complete but was siezed and had been drowned, along with that another complete engine, a frame that had been detabbed (apparently powder coated but this turned out to be one of many lies that is was told), many and various parts including wheels, carbs, brakes and heaps of little stuff, the engine was supposed to have an 836 kit through it but no it didn't. But as there was almost none of the stuff needed to built a full resto I decided to build what gets called a modified resto.
So, I have used the frame from the drowned bike and the spare engine. I have pulled apart everything on this bike and put it back together - some things more than once. The electrical's are all new and I have had to make up a few components myself, the engine had been reassembled with far too much sealant and so it was stripped down fully and cleaned out with new main and conrod bearings. I upgraded to a twin disc setup with cross drilled rotors, braided lines and retro style new Nissin master cylinder. The exhaust system came with the bike, its a 4 into 1 with not much baffle and only just legal, the carbs are getting rejetted at the moment to suit the exhaust.
I was originally wanting 'Planet Blue Metalic' but I didn't have a sample or a paint code, but the guy I found to do the paint had painted one recently for resto and had enough paint left over to do mine, I think its 'Sapphire Blue'. The seat I bought as is, it is an original base that had been reupholstered. The guards were pitted a bit and had a few dints and the front one already had the rivets removed from the bracket. So I cut a section out the middle from both front and rear and rewelded them to keep the nice rolled edges at each end and then painted to contrast the tank. I also pulled apart the guages and fitted new faces and repainted the surrounds and fitted LED's internally for the back light.
There is plenty more to read about in the thread if you could be bothered. I have also managed to source a lot of extra parts along way and hope to start on the next project when the weather cools down. I will be using a frame, wheels and tank from 76 police bike.
I would also like to thank the following people and businesses for their help and information, parts and guidance, If I have left anyone out I am sorry.
