CB500 Tank Badges - How Are They Removed?
« on: December 21, 2016, 05:48:41 AM »
Hello,

How do I remove and replace the white lettered tank badges on my 1972 CB500 fuel tank? I realize there are posts that mount to the tank but how are the badges removed?

Is glue used to reapply these badges? I'm considering dent repairs and paint on this tank and an inquiring mind needs to know these things.

Many thanks,

Rick

They can be carefully pryed out with a small screwdriver or pry bar.

Or start snaking fishing line behind them, like you're flossing. That helps get them lifted enough to use a small screwdriver. They're aluminum and you'll probably tweak them a bit. No big deal.

Excellent idea. I will give that a try.

I've discovered, at least when it come to the CB750K, that there are at least 2 types of grommets into which the tank badges push.

One is flat and slightly dished, (slides in behind the strip on the tank where the badge is attached) on my '76) the other more like a cup, (on my '72). I discovered the latter when digging the bondo out of my '72 tank, preparing it ready for a respray.

I'll see if I can find some pics for our edification...   :)

Oops, I stand corrected, I think.

If you look at the attached pic you can see both. I guess the cupped ones holds on the tank emblems and the flat ones hold on the side cover emblems.

I guess it'll have to wait for me to pry on them a little to know for sure. Thanks.

You can use a heat gun to soften the adhesive

No adhesive used on these.

I meant adhesion from the paint. I hate auto correct sometimes, lol

The strapping that is used for cardboard boxes, packaging, etc works really well. Just slide it in behind up to the post and start working it back and forth. Its plenty strong to completely remove the badge.
