Cb400f "goldie", Handbuilt show, Bikeexif, and dyno run.
« on: December 27, 2016, 06:28:32 AM »
It's about time I post this build up.  I bought this bike about three years ago.  A gentleman that was hard on his luck in an rv park was selling his cb550 ss, just sold his cb750ss and this 75 cb400f.  The bike had been sitting in the arizona sun and hadn't run in some years.  It was missing tank, side covers, airbox, tank, bars, headlight, and exhaust.  But the motor turned over well with good compression.  It only had 4500 miles on the clock and I brought it home

I went to the local junk yard and found a kerker header that had seen better days and got a tank off eBay.  I also went through the carbs and get the pipe to fire on my aux tank.  I have always loved the sound of the small inline fours!

Cb400f build aka "the come up"

So now that I was all excited to build this bike.  I got bombarded with some builds.  I had just finished up a 69 cl350 brat, and got locked in on a cb360 cafe and cl360 scrambler.

So after I wrapped up the green cafe, I found a job back in Iowa and packed up six of my bikes and moved.   My fun of building and working on bikes is becoming more of a part time gig so I decided to lauch my side business beginning of 2017.  Which brings me back to the 400.  I wanted a bike for the shop and to show what I can do.  So the 400 went back on the lift.  I was struggling to come up with a plan on this bike.  After a few beers staring at the bike I came to my conclusion.

This bike can from rotting away in an rv park and would be built into a lightweight street legal track bike.

« Reply #4 on: December 27, 2016, 06:46:18 AM »
So the plan was to shape and build a fiberglass seat section to go with the tank, lots of ttr400 parts, 466 big bore, stage 2 port from Mike, webco cam, oil cooler, lightened and balanced crank, shot peen rods.  For suspension stock forks with race tech springs and gold valves, ttr lower triple, race tech g3 shocks, frame crafters aluminum swingarm, and excel wheel hoops with some sticky rubber.

Motor is torn done.  Crank and rods are going to ape, cases are getting vapor blasted, and head is going to Mike R.

Question... you like the square edged tail section?
Not my cup of tea I guess.
The right side of the tank looks flat sided more than the left.  Is that just the filler and light color causing a perception change in depth of field?

Any special added touches planned for finish, frame or setup?

Are you sticking with stock forks?
What are your plans for the rear shocks?

I dunno, the seat looks surprisingly well executed to resemble road race bikes of that day (to me). I think bodywork changes like this need to be seen in their final form before voyeurs can appreciate the "end result".

Just remember to remove the passenger pegs since you're mono posto now  :D

It's just the filter on the tank.  The tail will have the edges rounded similar to the edges on the tank once I get it blocked straight.

Frame will be painted heavy metallic gold and bodywork will be black white and gold.  I'm running the stock forks with ttr 20mm axle, lower triple, racetech springs, and gold valves.  I'm going to run a Framecrafters boxed aluminum swingarm and racetech g3 rear shocks.

Thank you for the feedback!   I'm really happy with the shape too.

That swingarm will be gone in February, just waiting on my aluminum one to be built.  Can't wait!

Doesn't Kevin (ttr400) offer the same boxed swing arm? I bought one for my 550 years back.

depending on options it's $750-$1000 for a swingarm.  Karson has been amazing to deal with.  really cut me a deal on the shocks too.

I looked at mc-again and ueda swingarms.  I have a contact in japan i use for my rc51 and older 1000rr builds.  They were $1000+ without shipping.

He was doing them but the demand wasn't there so he hasn't done one in awhile he said.  Kevin has been a life saver with his knowledge and the parts he's supplying me.  With the larger from axle, stock fender brace and ttr lower triple, this front end will be pretty dang solid.

Made some progress this weekend

Going to run a front number plate.  Working out how I'm going to mount it and build around the speedo

Got the left side and top of the tank pulled straight and first layer of filler.  Going to do the right side tonight.
